Openings: “East West Connect” @ Above Second

Last Friday night, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong hosted Arrested Motion’s first curatorial project, East West Connect, with a lineup that represented the diverse selection of art we love and cover for you every day. It was gratifying to see that art fans in HK appreciated this type of art as well, evidenced by the turnout and the fact that most pieces that sold so far have found homes with local collectors. We also enjoyed some interesting discussions with attendees on the idea and […]

Video / Preview: Swoon – “Murmuration” @ Black Rat Projects

We mentioned this a couple weeks ago, but now is a good time for a reminder to make your way down to Black Rat Projects on December 1st for the unveiling of Swoon’s (interviewed) newest showing. Entitled Mumuration, the project has taken the Brooklyn-based artist three long weeks to create, transforming the gallery into an immersive installation featuring her signature intricate and elaborate paper cuts and sculptural shapings. Take a look at a recent video after the jump to get you in the mood…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Underbelly Show

Remember that secretive and unprecedented undertaking in New York last year entitled the Underbelly Project. Toiling four stories underground in an abandoned subway station in New York, over 100 artists invited by PAC and Workhouse left their mark on the space with murals and graffiti. Although the original “urban gallery” was sealed and unaccessible, this environment will be recreated in Miami for the Underbelly Show opening from Dec. 2 -5 (78 NW 25th Street in Miami, FL). Not only will the exhibition feature photos that documented […]

Showing: Ryan McGinley – “Wandering Comma” @ Alison Jacques Gallery

For his first London exhibition at Alison Jacques Gallery since the celebrated Moonmilk series over two years ago, Ryan McGinley has assembled seven new photographs, all in the largest format the American artist has yet worked in. Wandering Comma features photographs harmoniously balancing the orchestrated and the unpredictable, the staged and the spontaneous. Although the images begin with choreographed scenarios, the images that result are never wholly pre-meditated leaving their own freedom and initiative to the models or situation. Running through Thursday, December 22nd, Wandering Comma is a must-see show for anyone in and around the London area. […]

Openings / Streets: LUDO – “Super Discount” @ The Garage (Amsterdam)

Last night in Amsterdam, LUDO (interviewed) opened his third solo of the year at The Garage, bookending what has been a decidedly impressive and pervasive year both on the streets and indoors. Super Discount (previewed) diverged from the the Parisian artist’s graphite on paper modus operandi instead opting for screenprinted multiples on canvas. Inspired by Warhol’s production methodology and paying humble homage to his iconic Campbell’s soup collection, the series is comprised of nine provocative and visually compelling Del Monte can variations, each uniquely hand-finished […]

Openings: Boris Tellegen (DELTA) – “ABUNDANCE” @ Alice Gallery

Just the other night, the Alice Gallery in Brussels played host to a new body of work from Boris Tellegen aka Delta. The Amsterdam-based abstract graffiti specialist has been hitting up various parts of Europe recently with his art projects and shows including large-scale sculptural pieces in March at the Muziekgebouw Concert Hall in his home-city (covered) and then Basel, Switzerland for a showing at the kunstraum.ch artspace (covered) in July. This time around, Delta brought a wide variety of works collectively entitled Abundance to the table including paintings, collages, installations, projection […]

Teaser: Sylvia Ji – “Gilded Roses” @ Corey Helford

Coming up on December 17th, the Corey Helford Gallery will be presenting a new solo show, Gilded Roses, from Sylvia Ji (interviewed). We remember covering her show at the Culver City showspace all the way back in 2009 as well as in 2010, and this time around, her fans will be out in droves again to support the LA-based artist known for her day of the dead imagery although she has moved away from this recently. The new portraiture features her female archetypes in regal, […]

Showing: Lucien Smith – “Cripple Creek” @ Ritter / Zamet (London)

After working under Dan Colen for a time, recently graduating from Cooper Union, one of the oldest and most respected art institutions, and gaining representation by OHWOW, Lucien Smith has momentum and pedigree working in his favor, and over the past couple months has burst onto the art scene in a big way. The New York-based artist first turned heads at 41 Cooper Gallery back in May with his final project – an exhibition entitled Imagined Nostalgia – for the completion of his BFA in […]

Showing: Dalek @ Womb Gallery

James Marshall (Dalek) recently opened a show at the Womb Gallery in Oklahoma City featuring some minimalistic geometric paintings that bring to mind the nurturing motherly environs referenced by the name of the gallery. The pieces bring to mind a the hues used in similar piece for the recent MTV RE:DEFINE benefit auction (covered). More photos after the jump…
