Interviews: Alex Gross

Opening this Saturday night at Jonathan LeVine will be a new exhibition from Alex Gross, one of the more fascinating and complex painters we follow here at AM. The Los Angeles based artist will be making his return to the New York gallery after almost two years, bringing a fresh collection of works entitled “Discrepancies”, also the name of his newest monograph to be released the same night. We were delighted to be able to talk to Alex recently about his new body of work, […]

Preview: Matt Small – “That I May See” @ Black Rat Projects

You may remember that earlier this year we reported on an amazing trip by Matt Small (interviewed), Swoon (interviewed), RJ Rushmore (from Vandalog), and Mike Snelle from Black Rat Projects (interviewed) to Zambia to run a series of art activities with local children at the Robert Shitima School. The workshops on painting, printmaking and collage were a big success and had a major impact on the visitors and students alike. Six months later, Matt is now ready to reveal a new body of work titled […]

Openings: Brendan Monroe & Evah Fan – “Figments” & “Come What May” @ Galerie L.J.

Last Saturday in Paris, a special show from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) and Evah Fan opened at Galerie L.J. The American duo each brought separate bodies of work entitled “Figments” and “Come What May” respectively and both included paintings as well as sculptural works. As Brendan mentioned in our preview for his show, he has included some painted landscapes for the characters and faces that reappear in his work and we think these turned out incredibly well. When looking at these organic mountains and plains, the […]

Yoshitomo Nara Statues Up in New York

Over the weekend, New York was gifted two new sculptural installations from Yoshitomo Nara, placed in conjunction with his retrospective at the Asia Society, set to open on September 9th. The pair of 12-foot-high fiberglass dogs are on the Upper East Side (one across from the entrance to the Asia Society and the other just in front of the Park Avenue Armory) and will stand guard throughout the exhibition set to run until the beginning of next year. For those who can’t make it to […]

Openings: Sarah Joncas – “Siren” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last Friday, Sarah Joncas (interviewed) trekked down all the way from Ontario, Canada to attend the opening of her solo show at the Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Her newest body of work, “Siren”, is inspired by the seduction and romance of music and includes a large-scale mural, the timelapse of which we showed you last week. More opening night images after the jump…

Fame Fest ’10: JR

With the opening of this year’s Fame Festival just around the corner, another artist arrived to make his unique mark on the city of Grottaglie – JR! After getting past some initial obstacles, the French street photographer pasted up an image from his new series of works – “Unframed” and is the first piece pasted up by him that was not his photography. Another look after the jump…

Installation / Preview: Matthew Feyld – “Untitled 1 & 2” @ Krets – Malmö & Neon – Brösarp, Sweden

We have been long time admirers of Matthew Feyld’s work here of AM, and we’ve watched him hone his skills over the last few years with numerous group and solo showings. The quality and precision of the Canadian artist is second to none and the fine detail of his line work has to be seen in person to be truly appreciated. Lately, Feyld’s work has been moving away from the largely figurative body of work seen in the past and more towards abstraction whilst still maintaining […]

Video / Preview: Sarah Joncas – “Siren” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Later tonight, Sarah Joncas (interviewed) will be opening her show “Siren” at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City alongside Dabs Myla. Looking through the new body of work, you really get a sense that Sarah’s vision and technique is beginning to mature and grow. Take a look at a timelapse of the mural she has created for this exhibition in the video above as well as a quick preview of the work. Take a closer look at two of the paintings after the jump…

Studio Visits / Preview: Dave Kinsey – “New Works” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Sometimes, you just need to get away from it all. That’s exactly what Dave Kinsey did for his upcoming show at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery by moving up to Central California’s Three Rivers and focusing his energy into this fresh body of work. The head of Blk/Mrkt took his game to nature’s back yard, retreating from his urban studio in Los Angeles and from what we see, it’s given this new collection of paintings a whole new dimension. AM brings you an inside look into Mr. Kinsey’s […]

Takashi Murakami to create Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Float

Takashi Murakami is coming back to show in New York City, but this time, he’s in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. His contributions will be two specially designed floats of his studio mascots “Kaikai” and “Kiki”. With massive heads measuring 16 feet wide, it’ll be a pretty unforgettable impression these two Superflat characters will make when their larger than life helium filled bodies float down the streets of the Big Apple. We even dug up an old animation of Kaikai & Kiki in action […]
