Baby Tattooville ’09 – Reverse Studio Visits – Greg “Craola” Simkins

Coming to Baby Tattooville equipped with a blank canvas and some paint, Greg “Craola” Simkins treated BT attendees with the ultimate in “tabula rasa” art experience.Â Creating coats upon coats of background texture, Greg spent hours building the foundation of what will undoubtedly become another masterpiece.Â Expect to see the completed painting at his upcoming show “The Pearl Thief” opening November 3rd at Gallery 1988 (LA).Â Pictures after the jump.

Saturday night, the Joshua Liner Gallery played host to the openings of two striking solo shows. In the front gallery, Kenji Hirata presented “The Way Out Is The Way In,” a bold collection of modern abstract paintings on canvas and paper. Hirata superimposes bright opaque colors within flat color fields, which brings to mind minimalist or hard-edged painters of the mid-20th century. Friday night, AM was at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn to check out the opening of “Cutters,” an exciting group show of collage artists curated by James Gallagher. Brendan Monroe (interviewed) premiered a new body of work at Richard Heller Gallery over the weekend. In addition to some fantastic organic and biologically inspired paintings, he also delighted show attendees with several impressive installations. “Lost in the Thicket” opened last night in Culver City and AM was on hand at LeBasse Projects to take inÂ Nate Frizzell’s solo show. Our first impression of this new body of work (during an earlier studio visit) was one of appreciation at the increasing maturity in this young artist’s talent. Jeff Koons Rabbit in Covent Garden (London)

Apparently, a 53-foot inflatable rabbit found shelter inside London’s Covent Garden for a little while. Courtesy of one of the biggest Pop artists working today, Jeff Koons, the familiar rabbit is part of the Tate Modern’s current exhibition “Pop Life: Art in a Material World.” It is a floating replica of a figure that was produced in stainless steel in 1986.Â That sculpture is currently on display at the Tate.
