Baby Tattooville ’09 – Reverse Studio Visits – Greg “Craola” Simkins

Coming to Baby Tattooville equipped with a blank canvas and some paint, Greg “Craola” Simkins treated BT attendees with the ultimate in “tabula rasa” art experience.  Creating coats upon coats of background texture, Greg spent hours building the foundation of what will undoubtedly become another masterpiece.  Expect to see the completed painting at his upcoming show “The Pearl Thief” opening November 3rd at Gallery 1988 (LA).  Pictures after the jump.

Highlights: Recommended Openings For Oct 22-24

In 1994, Giant Robot was born with the purpose of documenting and promoting new, up-and-coming, underdog, overlooked, and hybrid Asian and Asian-American popular culture. Fifteen years later, the self-published magazine has not only evolved from a stapled-and-folded zine into a full-color, glossy publication with an international following, but also opened trend-setting shops and influential art galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City. To celebrate the magazine’s longevity, energy, and loyal readership, the second Giant Robot Biennale is being hosted by the Japanese […]

Openings: Shepard Fairey “Supply & Demand” @ Warhol Museum

“Don’t pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in inches” – Andy Warhol – a wise quote from the legendary pop artist. A quote which amid all the legal drama with the AP is advice that Shepard Fairey and museum patrons took to heart on Saturday when his “Supply & Demand” show was unveiled at the famed Warhol Museum. A special preview night was held to celebrate the second leg of Shepard’s 20 year retrospective and it seemed as if […]

Openings: Kenji Hirata and Ryan McLennan @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Saturday night, the Joshua Liner Gallery played host to the openings of two striking solo shows. In the front gallery, Kenji Hirata presented “The Way Out Is The Way In,” a bold collection of modern abstract paintings on canvas and paper. Hirata superimposes bright opaque colors within flat color fields, which brings to mind minimalist or hard-edged painters of the mid-20th century. At the same time, his organic forms and use of subtle gradients creates motion and energy often lacking in such modern works. In […]

Openings: Peru Ana Ana Peru “…And Then We Jumped Into the Abyss of Numbers” @ Brooklynite Gallery

AM was invited to Bed Stuy’s Brooklynite Gallery this weekend to witness Peru Ana Ana Peru putting the finishing touches on their gallery debut “…And Then We Jumped Into the Abyss of Numbers.” Up until now, the enigmatic duo have mostly been known for their cryptic eponymous tags found throughout Brooklyn. With this exhibition, however, PAAP show that their art goes beyond merely a puzzling name. It turns out that the pair are film-makers, who were enticed in recent years by New York’s street art […]

Releases: kozyndan – “Spring in Nakano” for Giant Robot Biennale 2 @ Japanese American National Museum

Famous for their panoramics, kozyndan created one just for the Giant Robot Biennalle (teased) opening next weekend at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM).  Entitled “Nakano in Spring,” the piece will be released as a print (limited to 1200) sized approximately at 39″ x 8,” each is signed and numbered.  Take a look at this nice 360 degree QuickTimeVR that they created of the image. Pics of the entire panoramic plus detailed views after the jump…

Openings: “Cutters” Collage Show @ Cinders

Friday night, AM was at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn to check out the opening of “Cutters,” an exciting group show of collage artists curated by James Gallagher. Gallagher, who is a collage artist himself, invited a diverse international selection of more than thirty participants, all of whom create their work by pasting, stapling, tying, sewing, gluing or otherwise assembling different images or items together, either manually or digitally. With so many multifaceted art works, the impact is visually overwhelming when first entering the gallery, but […]

Openings: Brendan Monroe @ Richard Heller Gallery

Brendan Monroe (interviewed) premiered a new body of work at Richard Heller Gallery over the weekend. In addition to some fantastic organic and biologically inspired paintings, he also delighted show attendees with several impressive installations. One of these was the constellation of hanging wood sculptures seen with Monroe above that were suspended from the high ceiling in the front room. Take a look at all the pics after the jump…

Openings: Nate Frizzell – “Lost in the Thicket” @ LeBasse Projects

“Lost in the Thicket” opened last night in Culver City and AM was on hand at LeBasse Projects to take in Nate Frizzell’s solo show. Our first impression of this new body of work (during an earlier studio visit) was one of appreciation at the increasing maturity in this young artist’s talent. Seeing the paintings in the gallery setting definitely fortified our opinion, especially after seeing how all the work played off each other and the installation (a tree branch from Nate’s parents’ backyard fashioned to […]

Jeff Koons Rabbit in Covent Garden (London)

Apparently, a 53-foot inflatable rabbit found shelter inside London’s Covent Garden for a little while. Courtesy of one of the biggest Pop artists working today, Jeff Koons, the familiar rabbit is part of the Tate Modern’s current exhibition “Pop Life: Art in a Material World.” It is a floating replica of a figure that was produced in stainless steel in 1986.  That sculpture is currently on display at the Tate. More pictures after the jump…
