Streets: How & Nosm on Bowery & Houston

It’s been a rough few weeks for New York City as Hurricane Sandy came up and took the city hostage as it wreaked havoc with flooding, blackouts and gas shortages. On Friday, twin brothers How & Nosm took the tall task of being the next artists invited to work on the iconic Bowery & Houston wall. Following up behind Aiko’s recent effort (covered), the twins braved the elements to join the ranks of notable peers such as RETNA, Kenny Scharf, Barry McGee, Shepard Fairey, Os Gemeos, JR, Keith Haring, and […]

Studio Visits: AJ Fosik

AJ Fosik’s sculptural artworks almost need no introduction. In a world where it is increasingly difficult to have a true individual voice as an artist, Fosik’s work has an original aesthetic honed over the years from his roots in graffiti, street art and two-dimensional drawing. AJ decided that his imagery would be better represented in three dimensions around seven years ago, and has continued to immerse himself in the medium of handcrafted woodwork for his iconography inspired art ever since. Using modern woodworking techniques (he doesn’t consider himself […]

Openings: KAWS – “Imaginary Friends” @ Galerie Perrotin

Officially opening their doors just hours ago, Galerie Perrotin in Paris unveiled all new works from the NY-based KAWS in his highly anticipated solo Imaginary Friends. Highlights of the show included multiples of his running chum canvases (also replicated as showcards making a nice souvenir) as well as creatively-shaped irregular piece that appeared to be mirrored in a more conventional painting right next to it – leading to an interesting side by side comparison. Also making the trip and greeting fans in the courtyard was the impressive COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH) sculpture […]

Preview: Sylvia Ji – “La Catrina” @ CHG Circa

In celebration of her favorite holiday, Día de los Muertos, Sylvia Ji (interviewed) will be presenting all new works tonight at CHG Circa Gallery. With a return to her familiar “Day of the Dead” imagery including masks, skulls, and religious iconagraphy, the Los Angeles-based artist also returns to a subject that she perhaps feels most passionate about and if so, it shows. The rich and intricate pieces feature a contemplative look at the festival as her characters are caught in mid-pose as they go about remembering and honoring the deceased. Discuss this show here. Streets / Videos: Herakut – The Giant Storybook Project (Part I)

It’s time to update you on something that German duo Herakut have been working on recently – The Giant Storybook Project. Acting on their long-time desires to create a children’s book, Jasmin (interviewed) and Falk have taken to the streets around the world to paint the “pages” of their story. Murals of Lily, Jay, two giants, and their adventures have already hit the walls in Kentucky, Germany, Montreal, Toronto, Rochester, and San Francisco. We’ll be taking a closer look at this project (scheduled to go through 2013) as it […]

NYCC ’12 – Costumes & Characters

In the spirit of Halloween, millions of people will be dressing up as their favorite characters this week. But for many fans attending Comic-Con around the globe, dressing up isn’t just a once a year occasion. Many get into “full” costume when attending their favorite fairs. In the past, we’ve brought you a look at the unique & crazy “get-ups” from the San Diego Comic-Con. This year AM attended the New York Comic-Con and saw some hardcore costumes. Thousands of costumes that represented multiple facets […]

LA-based artist Ross – who collaborated with James, Barry McGee, Steve Powers and others on the Street […]
