Streets: Nuart 2016 (Part II)

With only one day left for artists to finish their works for this year’s Nuart Festival, a lot murals and smaller pieces are getting completed as we’re writing this. One of the events that marked the official opening of this year’s Nuart Festival on the 8th of September was the opening of Jeff Gillette’s solo show at Nuart Gallery. For Dismayland Nord, the Detroit-based artist brought his iconic “dismayland” imagery to the idyllic city of Stavanger in Norway. As it was his first Scandinavian solo, Gillette prepared a brand new body of work for the exhibition. While AM is getting ready for trip to Norway for Nuart 2016, we just received couple of work in progress photos by festival photographers Brian Tallman, John Rodger and Calum Lasham. Giving us a taste of what is currently happening on the streets of Stavanger, these shots are just a teaser of what this year’s edition will produce in the Norwegian oil capital. Only few days before the official beginning of Nuart 2016, the team behind one of the leading street art festivals introduced their brand new Art City program. Sofia and the Mountain by NIMI was recently painted in light of Region Stavanger’s new mandate to further promote art and culture. This is the first artwork to be produced under Nuart’s self-financed initiative Art City program. After successfully painting what was billed as the world’s largest outdoor mural (covered) for last year’s NuArt Festival, French artists Ella & Pitr recently returned to Norway to create couple of new pieces in and around Stavanger. This time, they painted another giant in the center of the city, taking a tumble in a dilapidated four-story building. It’s no secret that people behind one of the oldest street art festivals, Nuart in Stavanger, always go for the artists with the freshest ideas and something to say. So, their newest project with the Bergen-based artist Nipper, is only a continuation of their worthy legacy to bring art out of museums, galleries and public institutions onto the city streets to become part of people’s everyday lives. The 15th anniversary NuArt Festival in Stavanger, Norway, concluded early this month and by all accounts was a huge success. The festival’s organizers reported record-breaking attendance for the main Nuart exhibition at Tou Scene (covered), as well as an overwhelmingly positive response to Nuart Plus—the festival’s symposium of talks by artists, academics and others on subjects pertaining to street art. One of the highlights of this year’s NuArt Festival is the completion of what is billed as the world’s largest outdoor mural in Klepp, just outside of Stavanger. Created by French artists Ella & Pitr along with a crew of some 30 volunteers, the 21,000 square meter mural was completed before the festival officially started.
