Streets: Da Mental Vaporz (France)

We had only caught up with French graffiti crew Da Mental Vaporz in Copenhagen at the end of August at the Galore Festival and now they are already onto their next project. After returning to their home country, the members traveled to Brest to do their part for the Crimes of Minds festival with one of the best collaborative murals we have seen in a while. Each artist was able to maintain their distinctive style yet the whole was greater than the sum of the […]

Streets: How & Nosm (Los Angeles) Part II

Just a couple of days before their upcoming solo show taking place at the Known Gallery, here we have a final look at the mural painted by the prolific twin artists How & Nosm. As part of the L.A. Freewalls project, the mural entitled Heartship stands near the center of Downtown Los Angeles took nearly a week to complete. This new piece contains both the immense detail & complexity which they incorporate into every one of their artworks and even more impressive is that fact […]

Retna x David LaChappelle for Vanity Fair

So, it looks like the new spread for Vanity Fair that we mentioned a while back finally materialized. Taken by David Lachapelle (who just opened a show at PRISM), the photograph features RETNA (featured) in front of his West Hollywood mural (covered) with a little help from photoshop it seems. As an added bonus, we have for you after the jump a video that surfaced recently featuring footage of RETNA’s WeHo mural as well as an interview…

A couple weeks ago, the Carmichael Gallery hosted an exhibition from influential photographers and Angelenos Eriberto and Estevan Oriol. Entitled Like Father, Like Son, the exhibition consisted of 25 limited edition prints from each photographer, including black and white, color, silver gelatin and digital c-prints. More photos after the jump from Brandon […]

Openings: “Abstractions” @ Opera Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Abstractions at New York’s Opera Gallery. The special group show housed two separate groups of artists. The first was a retrospective from the old school abstract movement from the 1940 to present day. Original works from artists such as Miro, Francis, Soulages, Hartung, Fontana, Arman and Matta were on display. This contrasted with the second group of names from today’s artistic movement like Rostarr, Bast, Ron English, Saber and more who have evolved in their own form of abstraction. […]

Openings: Lazarides Minotaur Event @ The Old Vic Tunnels

A couple nights ago, the Minotaur event put on by Lazarides kicked off at the The Old Vic Tunnels, also the site of 2010′s Hell’s Half Acre exhibition. This time around, the theme was an old Greek legend and depending on your choice for price of admission, dining was included from top Michelin-starred chefs. Of course for us, the art was the focus of the night including offerings from Stanley Donwood, Jonathan Yeo, Antony Micallef, Conor Harrington, Doug Foster, 3D, Ian Francis, ATMA, Michael Najjar […]

It also features a variety of pasters which are now showing up all across the city of Los Angeles. More photos after the jump…

Auctions: Dreweatts “Urban Contemporary Art” Sale (October)

Last night in London, Dreweatts kicked off an important week of auctions at the major houses with decidedly weak results. At a mere shadow of the £300,800 – 429,400 estimate, their October Urban Contemporary Art Sale realized a total of £166,320 ($258,646) non-inclusive of Buyer’s Premiums, barely half the low end estimate. These lackluster results lie in stark contrast to some of the compelling sales booked during various September auctions, where record results were made at Bonhams Urban Art Sale, MTV:REDEFINE, as well as with […]

Streets: “Urban Forms Gallery” Roundup (Poland)

The organizer of the Urban Forms Gallery project in Poland, Michael Biezynski, recently sent over some photos of the wall murals to share with our readers. It is rare to say that we enjoyed all the work from every artist that participates in various festivals or events, but in this rare case, we were quite impressed with what every artist created including some that we were not familiar with. Check out what Aryz, Remed, Kenor, M-City, Etam Crew, Sat One, and Sepe/Chazme had to offer […]
