Swoon – “Anthropocene Extinction” @ ICA Boston

As we previewed the installation process a couple weeks back, Swoon (interviewed) has now completed her site-specific installation Anthropocene Extinction for The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA). Commissioned by the ICA as the fifth – and largest to date – project for the Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall, SWOON’s impressive creation that addresses humanities impact on the environment is anchored by a mural that spans the entire length of the lobby and rises 40 feet to the ceiling. A large scale portrait one of […]

Openings: KAWS – “Hold The Line” @ Honor Fraser

Just several hours ago, the Honor Fraser gallery finally unveiled the latest works by New York-based artist KAWS. This show, Hold The Line, marks his second return to the gallery (see 2009) and the artwork on display was more than enough to warrant the attention and interest this show had been garnering ever since it was first announced. This current exhibition features a collection of approximately fifty circular works of art, or tondos (first seen at this year’s Armory). Each piece contains a different rendition […]

Openings: José Parlá – “Character Gestures” @ OHWOW

Last night, OHWOW gallery presented Jose Parla’s new body of work titled Character Gestures, which predictably drew much of the art community out in support and to take in a rare LA exhibition from the urban painter and calligraphist. In this collection, the Cuban-born artist explores various themes that deal with aspects of birth and rebirth but he does so in such an interesting way that invites the viewer to study and dissect the meanings behind each piece. For the most part, this work carries […]

Openings: “Building Context” @ Guerrero Gallery

With Alex Lukas set to present his superb collection of new paintings this Saturday at Guerrero Gallery, we thought we would highlight the previous show that just closed at the SF showspace entitled Building Context. The show featured a set of artists including Leigh Wells, Matt Gonzalez, Adam Feiblman (Adam 5100), Boris Tellegen (Delta), Greg Lamarche, Joey Piziali, and Ray Beldner that utilize paper as a medium in their art, leading to an eclectic mix of work that was diverse yet cohesive. Openings: “Yard Dogs” @ Wooster Street Social Club

We recently attended the opening of Yard Dogs at New York’s Wooster Street Social Club. It seems that almost everyone with a background in graffiti came out to catch this exhibition that featured works from renowned artists of the spray can. The heavy rotation of old skool talent such as KR, BIO, T-Kid 170, Keo, NICER, James Top, PNUT2, Rebel, CES, SHARP, Fritos, NIC 707, CEY, REVOLT and Tracy 168 showed indoors what many of us have been used to seeing on the streets of […]

Openings: Pedro Matos – “Ephemera” @ Shooting Gallery

Portuguese artist, Pedro Matos opened his first U.S. solo show entitled Ephemera at Shooting Gallery Saturday night (previewed). This twenty-two year old artist has created a body of work that creates a political, social and moral dialogue by painting portraits of those who are often overlooked and forgotten by society. Highly recommended that you check out the work in person (if possible), as he has done a fine job in creating oil on canvas based works that also physically look like they are deteriorating and […]

Streets: Risk & Retna – Heal The Bay Charity Project (Santa Monica)

This morning, AM was invited for the unveil of a new collaborative piece between graffiti artists Risk and Retna (featured). In conjunction with the Heal the Bay charity, an environmental group working to keep the Santa Monica bay clean and free of pollution, the two prolific artists had been working on this project during the last two months under major secrecy. The process actually began 2 months ago when Risk began layering a multitude of wooden panels with a palette of different colors meant to […]
