Highlights: Recommended openings for April 16 – 18

April is quickly rushing past as we gear up for some big shows around the corner this May. This week sees a bit of a slow in overall quantity of shows, but there are still a couple of shows out there keeping us on our toes. Joshua Petker’s return to Corey Helford Gallery will be leading the charge on the west coast side of things while Miss Van takes her special brand of street work south of the border for a show with Fifty24MX in the heart […]

Openings: “Three-Handed” & “Smother Your Mother” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

This past weekend, AM caught the opening of the Date Farmers, Eric White (interviewed), Nicola Verlato and Fulvio Di Piazza at Jonathan Levine Gallery. The two shows were unique as it touched on both ends of the spectrum in terms of dimensions with all the way from large scale museum size works to a cornucopia of medium to smaller size pieces. First, we saw the immense paintings from “Three Handed” which featured Eric White, Nicola Verlato and Fulvio Di Piazza. Eric’s breathtaking piece “Massacre of the […]

Preview: TrustoCorp – “An Overt Display of Mischief and Mayhem” @ Brooklyn Brothers Gallery

Opening later tonight at the Brooklyn Brothers Gallery in New York is TrustoCorp’s debut exposition/party. Entitled “An Overt Display of Mischief and Mayhem”, expect just that from the street art conglomerate. As seen in the photos provided, TrustoCorp will be celebrating the first phase of their nationwide culture jamming project. From the custom made street signs to their rebranded products, and what also appears to be some new shooting range targets. There’s really no better way to take out your tax day frustrations and troubles […]

Next week, Black Rat Projects opens its doors to a comprehensive survey of street art spanning several decades of outdoor expression. As you can see from the image above, he’s already in town working on the streets in preparation for his “Around The Wall” show. Take a look at a couple promotional videos released by POW after the jump…

Barry McGee recently opened a show for the 75th Anniversary of SFMOMA back in January (covered). Now comes further insight into the process as The Creative Lives has come up with fascinating video interview with and mini-documentary with the elusive street and contemporary artist. Discuss Barry Mcgee here.

Preview: “Fresh Cream 2” @ Opus Art

Opus Art in Newcastle opens the second of it’s “Fresh Cream” group shows this Thursday, and we can share with you an image from each of the exciting group of young artists involved. Some names may be familiar to our readers already, such as North-East native Hush (interviewed), and London-based Lex Thomas, who’s small but beautifully rendered classically inspired work intertwined with her pixelated backgrounds we recently saw with Opus at the Scope Fair in Miami during Basel week. Other artists showing in “Fresh Cream […]

Openings: Banksy – “Exit Through The Gift Shop” LA premiere

AM was lucky enough to be able to attend the Los Angeles premiere of Banksy’s “Exit Through The Gift Shop” earlier tonight at the historic Los Angeles Theatre. With the art community on high alert, the cavernous and exquisitely beautiful theater was filled (at least the first floor) with collectors, celebrities, pseudocelebrities, and knowledgeable street art fans. As we guessed in an earlier post, no expense was spared for this important opening with major media outlets on hand to witness the many installations on site […]

Streets: Banksy in LA (Part II)

As we suspected, Banksy wasn’t done with Los Angeles after the first stencil (security guard with Koons dog) he put up yesterday. Seen above is a newly discovered piece in downtown LA that is raising expectations for the special premiere of his documentary tonight in a secret location. As opposed to his premiere in NY (btw, we are giving a poster away in that article), the Bristol Bomber actually appears to be in town for this screening and by not announcing where it will be […]
