Studio Visit: Mark Whalen (Kill Pixie)

Last week, we featured a video teaser for Mark Whalen’s latest exhibition entitled Anomaly. We were fortunate enough to be able to follow this up with a visit to his studio and document the some of the process as he readies for his September 10th show at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery. If that video didn’t blow you away, this visit should at the least give you a great indication of the hard work put forth by the Australian born artist. Whalen, who also goes by […]

Studio Visit / Preview: Cyrcle – “We Never Die” @ Design Matters

Last week, AM paid a visit to the studio of the street art collective known as Cyrcle. Combining their different backgrounds which blend graffiti, fine art and design, the trio will debut their first solo exhibition this coming Thursday over at Design Matters located in West Hollywood. Titled We Never Die, the exhibit will explore the group’s fascination with Classic Romanticism and delve into concepts of death, life, and the gray areas in between. Although the artistic ensemble has been known for their wheat paste […]

Studio Visits: David Shillinglaw

Studio visits are probably the most enjoyable things that we get to do here at AM. A little time to talk with the artist about their work, and also a chance to soak up the environment in which the work is created. David Shillinglaw’s environment is a pretty special one. His North London home and studio is situated at the top of an old brick-built warehouse / factory building and the huge loft offers more work and play space than any of the studios than […]

Studio Visits: Jeremy Fish

With the last week of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) Listen and Learn exhibition (covered) coming to a close at Joshua Liner Gallery, we bring you an inside look at Mr. Fish’s San Francisco studios when we visited the artist earlier this year as he was getting ready for the show. Remember this is the last week, if you haven’t made a stop to catch this show, do so before it closes this Saturday. Check out the full set taken for us by Joe Russo after the jump.

Studio Visits: Ron English – “Skin Deep” @ Lazarides Rathbone Place

Last time Ron English was prepping for a show in the UK, he invited us over for a visit in his New Jersey based studio. Fast forward a few years, he’s moved into a large house in suburb of Beacon, New York. Utilizing the entire lower level as his work space, Ron is getting ready to unleash a new series of works at Lazarides (Rathbone Place) on June 23rd. Entitled Skin Deep: Post-Instinctual Afterthoughts On Psychological Portraiture, this exhibition will display many of Ron’s signature popaganda characters […]

Studio Visit: Sage Vaughn

Children of a Lesser God, the first UK solo show by Los Angeles-based artist Sage Vaughn opens today at Lazarides Gallery in London. AM visited the artist’s studio last year as he prepared for both this exhibition and the release of hand-painted multiples — the latter screenprinted by Modern Multiples and painted with watercolours. Vaughn’s sunlit space seemed like the ideal environment for working. There was also an additional and immediate source of inspiration right outside his studio: a bird-feeding area that apparently attracts sparrows, […]

Preview/Studio Visit: SABER – “The American Graffiti Artist” – Flags

When Jeffrey Deitch first publicly hinted last summer of his intention to mount the first ever large-scale major museum exhibition of graffiti and street art, the first artist that came to his mind as the representational figure for today’s movement was SABER (interviewed).  Art in the Streets became a reality at MOCA and true indeed, SABER is a integral part of the massive and wildly successful exhibition.  Flexing his multitasking skills to its fullest, the LA-based artist will also be displaying his work in Street […]

This month sees Toronto based artist Jacub Gagnon bring his surrealist still life paintings to Los Angeles for his solo exhibition entitled Elements & Oddities. The exhibition opens at Thinkspace on Saturday April 30th, and also features Yosuke Ueno. Lowbrow pop master David MacDowell (interviewed) returns the Culver City showspace also in the project room space with Lowbrow Love Letter. AM caught up with Jacub ahead of the exhibition to ask a few questions about his work. Read on after the jump for our interview, […]

Studio Visits: Martin Oppel

Back during Art Basel Miami, we had the pleasure of visiting the Miami studio of Argentinian-born, Miami/NY-based artist Martin Oppel. Oppel, who has shown with Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Miami and Paris amongst others, works in a wide range of mediums—including painting, sculpture and most recently photography—often focusing on the materials and the process of art, while also making work that is visually attractive and thought-provoking. Dominating his space were what appeared to be gravity-defying stacks of rock, marble and concrete, which were in fact […]

Studio Visits: D*Face

D*Face is currently putting the final touches to a whole new body of work for his US West Coast debut solo show Going Nowhere Fast opening on April 9th at Corey Helford Gallery’s Culver City spot. AM has been anticipating what Face would come up with for this show, as he always turns up the heat for solo exhibitions and brings in new themes. We went along to his studio recently to see how the work was coming together and grabbed a few shots of […]
