We recently stopped by Kevin Cyr’s Brooklyn studio to check out his latest body of work slated for his two-person show with Jessica Hess entitled “Temporal Spaces,” which was curated by Lainya Magana and opens at San Francisco’s White Walls March 6. Stepping into the space, we were amazed to see how productive Cyr has been since his last show at NYC’s Raandesk Gallery in January (covered). Covering floor to ceiling of one of his studio’s huge walls was a mosiac of detailed paintings – […]

As Shepard Fairey’s retrospective museum show “Supply and Demand” landed in Cincinnati this past week for the final stop of the tour, AM was on hand to take part in all of the opening festivities! The fun kicked off Thursday night at the Contemporary Art Center (CAC), where about 125 people were on hand for a very special evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dinner with Shepard and Amanda Fairey. The guests in attendance were treated to a very private sneak preview of the show. In attendance were members of […]

We at AM are already looking forward to Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) solo show this summer after seeing a taste of what’s to come. Expected to fill both rooms of Joshua Liner gallery come June, we can only salivate thinking about the monster body of work that Greg is working. We’ll have more to follow as the show draws closer but perhaps this commission he did recently for Everlast can whet your appetite. Discuss Craola here.

Art critic Charlie Finch just posted on artnet one of the first reviews of the 2010 Whitney Biennial, which officially opens tomorrow. As each Biennial is an attempt to take the pulse of contemporary art in America, it is usually a challenging show, spanning all mediums, which typically offers at least something of interest for any art lover. However, it seems that Finch thinks a little more highly of this Biennial, ending his review “This is not only the greatest of Whitney Biennials, it is […]

Yoshitaka Amano’s “Deva Loka : Los Angeles” show (previewed) opened this past weekend at LeBasse Projects. Not surprisingly, the cosplay (also seen here & here) fans were out in full force for the japanese artist who is famous for his work in Vampire Hunter D and the Final Fantasy video games. His work takes younger fans of current Japanese art back to some of its recent roots as you can definitely see how his paintings have influenced artists such as Mariko Mori, Takashi Murakami and […]

Last year, we told you about the video that Murakami, Kirsten Dunst and McG were creating to be shown at the Tate Modern “Pop Life” exhibition (here). You can now see entire crazy video, (Update: We have removed the link to the video which was apparently uploaded without the authorization of Kaikai Kiki.) “Akihabara Majokko Princess”, which depicts Kirsten running around the streets of Akihabara in wild cosplay costumes while singing a cover of the Vapors’ “Turning Japanese”. Did you catch Nigo from a Bathing Ape in there too? […]

To complement our recent coverage of Robert Williams’ show “Conceptual Realism in the Service of the Hypothetical” at the Cal State University Northridge Gallery, we thought you may like this cool video that Hurley made with Robert Williams. In the video, we catch a glimpse of Robert’s house and his hot rods. He also talks about his iconic “Appetite for Destruction” painting (featured) that was used for the Guns & Roses album. Discuss Robert Williams here.

For one of Deitch Projects last hurrahs, the gallery will host “Bowery Boys,” an exhibition of new paintings by Rosson Crow. When we were in Philly to check out Steve “ESPO ICY” Powers’ amazing “Love Letter” mural project (covered), we stopped by his center city headquarters to chat with the man himself and get a behind-the-scenes look at his work and creative process. Similar to Powers’ previous Coney Island studio opened in conjunction with Creative Time’s Dreamland Artists Club, his Philadelphia space is part studio, part working sign shop and part neighborhood hangout. With every wall covered with ephemera, art, jokes and junk, it’s clear that […]

Shaquille O’Neal’s curatorial debut opened at Flag Art Foundation this past Friday to a mass of curious art fans. A line filled the lobby just for the elevator up to the duplex gallery space on the 9th and 10th floor. The massive gallery space was justly utilized to house both the ginormous and microscopic pieces that represented the show’s theme “Size Matters”. “The Big Curator” did a nice job not only picking some of the top names in the industry, but also selecting some very relevant […]
