Meggs for The Hundreds

If you remember, Australian artist Meggs was in town for a solo exhibition currently showing in Los Angeles at the Thinkspace Gallery (covered). While here, he also was asked to paint a mural at The Hundreds warehouse complex (also see Stephen Harrington). The piece features a skull in hand rendered in his signature comic-inspired style. Over the weekend, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City welcomed in Meggs from Australia as he opened his latest solo show. Entitled Heavenly Creatures, the exhibition included a mixture of paintings, sculptural works, and overlying murals including some interactive spinning panels that could be flipped by attendees. As usual, the new work featured his semi-abstract renderings of comic-inspired superheroes in kinetic compositions. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss this show here. Discuss Meggs here.

Tomorrow night (April 6th) at Thinkspace Gallery, Aussie artist Meggs will be unveiling all new works for his fans in Los Angeles (his first show in the area since four years ago). Heavenly Creatures will include paintings, sculptural works, and an installation featuring his street-infused imagery that is heavily influenced by comics and mythology. It has a been a couple months since hanging out with the Everfresh crew member in Hawaii, so it will be nice to catch up and see what he has been working [...]

After another enjoyable retreat in Hawaii for AM, it’s time to wrap up another successful POW WOW (see all our coverage here). Our global summary of street work returns this week with a look around the world but heavily tilted towards Florida due to Basel Week Miami. While roaming the streets during Basel Week Miami, AM came across our old friends from POW WOW, Meggs and Phibs working on a massive collaborative mural. The summary of last week’s street activity is headlined by this new mural from Aaron Martin (aka Angry Woebots) in Hawaii. The piece which is located in the kaka’ako district at the UFC Gym (BJ Penn) in Honolulu was painted in preparation for the upcoming POW WOW event. Over the weekend, Australian-based painter Meggs opened his latest show Truth In Myth (previewed) at White Walls. The show featured a grand installation of a pyramid of skulls in a fully painted room, as well as a large street piece on the wall right outside the gallery. The new body of work consisted of paintings, collage, sculpture and mixed media that bridge the gap between past and present by fusing contemporary superhero elements with that of ancient mythology. Tomorrow night in San Francisco, White Walls will be lending their walls to Australia-based painter Meggs as he reveals a new body of work he has been creating on site over the last month. Truth in Myth will feature his comic-inspired imagery infused with kinetic textures and abstract touches played out on multiple surfaces. Besides the aerosol and acrylic on canvas works, his renderings of gods, heroes, and supernatural beings were also painted on plaster skulls, original 1980′s Phantom Comics, and wood knife sculptures.
