Streets: Meggs (Hong Kong)

While in Hong Kong for his Journey is the Reward showing (covered) at the Above Second Gallery, Aussie street artist Meggs also took time to leave his mark on the walls around the city. In the photo above, you can see his collaboration with locals Xeme & Sinic on a phoenix inspired mural. Other notables from HK include the shutters of the gallery as well as a re-occuring ghost image that plays on the slang for non-Asian foreigners in town. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Meggs – “Journey is the Reward” @ Above Second

Last Friday in Hong Kong, Meggs made the 4500 mile journey from Australia again for another solo exhibition (see 2010) at the Above Second Gallery. With paintings, sculptures, and wall murals infused with his urban aesthetic and comic-inspired imagery filling the showpace, fans who attended the opening for Journey is the Reward were certainly not disappointed. Australian painter Meggs, who we recently saw in Hawaii for the annual POW WOW art retreat, has moved on to his next project – a solo in Hong Kong. POW WOW ‘ 12 / Streets: Will Barras x Meggs x Mr. Jago x Angry Woebots x Phibs x Peap Tar

Continuing our look on the streets of Hawaii, the impact of POW WOW and the artists brought in from around the world on the industrial district of Kaka’ako is undeniable. This time we look at the building that houses former UFC champion BJ Penn’s gym. Artists hailing from Australia (Meggs & Phibs), Britain (Will Barras & Mr. Jago) and New Zealand (Peap Tar) collaborated along side Hawaiian artist Angry Woebots to create an impressive piece. Teaser: POW WOW 2012 (Hawaii)

In a couple weeks, the AM crew will be heading over Hawaii to this year’s POW WOW. Curated by Jasper Wong and hosted by Loft In Space / Fresh Cafe in Oahu, the art retreat will feature a extensive lineup of artists painting the surrounding industrial district of Kaka’ako. Along with beautifying the streets, the event will culminate with opening on February 18th featuring original artwork from the participants. Streets / Video: Meggs x Endeavor Snowboards (Vancouver)

Meggs, who recently invaded San Francisco along with members of the Young and Free Aussie crew, apparently decided to head up even more north pay a solo visit to Vancouver. While there, a sweet video (filmed and directed by Randy Ross) was put together as he worked on the mural seen above for the Endeavor Snowboards building as well something for the offices. Openings: Meggs – “Inner Demons II” @ Backwoods Gallery

Prior to showing in San Francisco, the talented Meggs exhibited the second part of his Inner Demons exhibition at Melbourne’s Backwoods Gallery. Similar to his showing in London’s Red Bull Studios, the artist returned to his home country to display a collection of paintings, sculptures and prints utilizing his signature wild strokes & splash techniques.
