Streets: Vhils – “Caniçada Dam Project” (Portugal)

Recently at the in Caniçada Dam in Northern Portugal, Vhils (interviewed) completed a striking new mural chiseled directly into the face of the water barrier. Only a couple days before the opening of his first museum show, Dissection, Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils finished this large outdoor piece in front of the Museu da Electricdade where the show will be held. As the last in a series of large works he created through the city, the final 360 degrees piece Panorama on the round water tank is one of his most elaborate ones yet. After leaving his mark all over the globe, from wooden sheds in Brazilian rain forest (covered) to large warehouses in Hawaii (covered), Alexandre Farto aka Vhils is opening a museum solo in his homeland. The Portuguese coastal town of Cascais near Lisbon recently saw the opening of Europe’s first hotel-managed arts district inside a recently renovated Renaissance-era fortress, run by Pousada de Cascais Cidadela Historic Hotel. Their “Arts District” project invited six artists for a year-long residency, during which their studios as well as five new art galleries will be open to public. Recently, Los Angeles art collective Cyrcle. spent time in Portugal for their latest exhibition titled “Capture the Flag! : Conquer the Divide!” (covered). Mexico-based street artist Liqen, who was just recently in upstate New York for the Wall Therapy Festival (covered), has traveled now to the Azores for the Walk & Talk Festival.  Vhils had already made his mark in San Miguel, and now Liqen has done the same with this surreal spaceship on the side of a building entitled Satellite Souleater.
