Openings: ROA – “Metazoa” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

After our interview & studio visit with the Belgium-based ROA ahead of his solo in New York, we attended the opening to see the results of his hard work over the last month crafting and painting a new body of work entitled Metazoa. The show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s  529 West 20th Street location featured the prolific street artist’s familiar animal imagery painted on found objects with clever interactive panels or different point of views that highlight different anatomic systems in each of his subjects. Take a look at the photos […]

After spending some time with the Belgium-based ROA in Hawaii last month (covered), we followed up recently with a visit inside his studio as he was busy preparing for his solo with Jonathan LeVine Gallery entitled Metazoa at their 529 West 20th Street location. The work for the show was being created during a residency at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City with plans also to paint a mural at a Mana-owned building located near the approach to the Holland Tunnel (more on this later). Along with shots of […]

POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: ROA

ROA debuted at POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015 (more coverage here) with a double piece painted just outside of Lana Lane studios. Familiar with using architectural elements and obstacles wisely in his work, he made a great use of the corner wall he was painting on. The creatures of choice for this mural was the nautilus and hermit crab, both native species of the Hawaiian islands. The Belgiun artist said he had a wish to paint a nautilus for a very long time, but until now he was never painting in […]

Other notable walls come from ROA – Germany (source), Herakut – USA, […]

Openings: Roa – “Suovetaurilia” @ Dorothy Circus Gallery

After several months of traveling and creating murals, ROA opened a new solo with Dorothy Circus Gallery on October 31st, introducing some fresh indoor works. Titled Suovetaurilia, the show is dedicated to Rome and its audience, as it refers to the ancient ritual animal sacrifice of a pig (sus), a sheep (ovis) and a bull (tauris) common at one time in the area. With this exhibition, the prolific Belgian artist is connecting the Rome in the distant past, where thousands of exotic animals were killed for people’s entertainment, with the contemporary […]

Painted for the Life Is Beautiful Festival, the wall can be found on Stewart and N. 6th Street. Other notable public art comes from […]
