The A5 sized drawing will be available at the Greek St. Location July 19th at 2pm at £950 plus VAT, but of particular interest is that it is a glimpse at what’s to come for his upcoming solo at Lazarides (Rathbone Place) in October.  As always, expect […]

Openings: Shawn Barber – “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots” @ Shooting Gallery

Shawn Barber’s latest solo show, “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots,” (setup) opened up last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring a full body of fresh work, Shawn’s use of modern tattooed subjects (who range from Modern Body Art’s Jo Harrison and Blackheart’s Scott Sylvia and Jeff Rassier to MMA fighter/Seventh Son Tattoo’s Luke Stewart and comedian Margaret Cho) translates very well, showing a softer and sometimes even contemplative side of a culture often perceived in precisely the opposite light. The representation of a “lowbrow” art through a more […]

Openings: Dennis McNett – “Year of the Wolfbat” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Dennis McNett’s (streets) show “Year of the Wolfbat” (setup) at Thinkspace Gallery was a whiff of fresh air for the Los Angeles art scene. With a body of work that felt raw and organic, the printmaking teacher at the Pratt Institute filled the gallery with a strong mixture of installation and sculpture pieces, as well as hand-carved works on wood and of course, silk-screened works on cloth and paper, all of which centered around Dennis’ animal and nature motifs. Those who weren’t able to make it to the two-day only show, don’t fret. AM’s got […]

Openings: Group Exhibition @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Saturday night, AM attended the opening of Joshua Liner Gallery’s summer group exhibition, which collects solid works from a very strong roster of artists, some of whom the gallery has shown previously and others of whom the gallery is working with for the first time. From the show, it is clear that Liner is actively evolving and maturing his gallery. And from the response from collectors and others at the opening, it seems that what he’s doing is working. More after the jump…

Armsrock – Secret Places

Armsrock (interviewed), who recently opened a dual show with Chris Stain in NY, posted up some pictures of what looks like an old shipyard. Apparently only he knows the location as he labeled it “Secret Places.”  Wherever it may be, anyone who wanders into this area will be inspired by the quiet beauty these pieces add to the rusted hulls and weathered timber. More after the jump.

Releases: Marion Peck – F*ck You print

New York gallery Sloan Fine Art recently released an exclusive giclee print from one of the leading lights of the pop-surrealism scene – Marion Peck.  The painting, of which this print is based on, was one of the stand out pieces featured in Marion’s recent solo show with Sloan Fine Art – “Ladies and Clowns” (covered).  The print is released in an edition of just 40, and after pre-sales to Alix Sloan’s Marion Peck collector list, we understand that now there are just a handful […]

Teaser: London Police – “Brothers in Arms” @ Carmichael Gallery

The London Police (TLP) are coming to LA!  Last we saw them, they were opening a solo show at Stolenspace in April (covered).  In these teaser pics, we can definitely see references such as Disneyland, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood sign among many others.  Their solo “Brothers in Arms” is set to open September 10th at Carmichael Gallery. More pics after the jump.

Preview: Mark Dean Veca – “As Cold As They Come” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Most of you have probably see Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) iconic Popeye image, perhaps from the large mural he did in his big retrospective exhibition at UCSD last January.  What you may not have seen though is the spinach-loving sailor’s entire crew including Bluto, Olive Oyl, Sweat Pea, and Wimpy rendered in Mark’s signature psychedelic and visceral “Toile de Jouy” patterns. Along with this “Popeyeconography” series of 36″ x 24″ paintings he did for Hotwire Comics 2 (Fantagraphics), he will also have paintings that reference […]
