Later this month, sculptor Kate MccGwire returns to All Visual Arts in her home city of London (see 2011) for a new solo show entitled Lure – “a dual reference to the ring of feathers used by a falconer to call and command their birds, and to the siren-like call of the work itself.” Creating non-conventional sculptural works with her material of choice – iridescent feathers – MccGwire is able to shape the plumage into undulating and seductive structures. This week’s Streets: World Roundup feature is headlined by a new mural (photo by Lois Stavsky) in New York City by Ron English, who worked overtime to finish it before Hurricane Sandy hit. The piece (on Mulberry Street between Canal and Hester in New York’s Little Italy) depicting his Temper Tot character is a English’s first mural in Manhattan in about 25 years as part of The New York Comedy Festival and Vandalog’s series of indoor and outdoor installations collectively titled The Art of Comedy. The other weekend, AM swung by Oakland-based painter/illustrator Mike Sutfin’s studio as he was putting the final touches to his Creeping Nomadic show at Grass Hut in Portland that runs til November 30th. The show features a series of small oil paintings on board (none of which are digitally colored!), ink illustrations, t-shirts, and hand-painted versions of his toy, Battle Man and Battle Rat (which were painted by him and other artists).
