Focus: Banksy – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

The most speculated upon artist of Art in the Streets was none other than the mysterious and supremely talented Banksy. Not “officially” announced on the initial roster of artists involved in the MOCA exhibition, rumors buzzed in art land that the acclaimed director of the Oscar nominated Exit Through The Gift Shop would be the “special guest” appearing in the exhibition. Banksy didn’t disappoint as he brought the “heavy weaponry” back to the city that held his Barely Legal show in 2006. Banksy brought many […]

Focus: Osgemeos – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

From our first look at the epic “Art in the Streets” exhibition yesterday, you should have gotten the idea of how complex and expansive the setup really was. We now have time to bring you some in depth looks at some of the juiciest parts of the show starting with a look at the Brazilian twins Osgemeos. Take a look some detailed pics after the jump of the corridor of the MOCA that they transformed with their signature speakers, colorful paintings, and a crazy install […]

Showing: Jonathan Viner & Elizabeth McGrath @ Sloan Fine Art

AM stopped by the LES district last week in New York to catch the latest show from Jonathan Viner and Elizabeth McGrath held at Sloan Fine Art (previewed). Jonathan’s exhibition Computer Science tugged at our heart as it brought back nostalgic memories of a time that has faded from our view by taking us on a retro journey when our parents were young, cool and of course rocking the over-sized electronic systems. Viner’s style seemed to capture that tinted and earthy style of the seventies […]

Set to open to the public this Sunday, the show was in the final stages of preparation as AM stopped by today to check on the progress both indoors and out. After a quick lap indoors, we feel confident enough to tell you that this looks to be one the best show that we’ve ever seen. Bad news is that we […]

Last week Julia Chiang opened her latest show in New York’s Half Gallery. This exhibition Security Is Mostly A Superstition featured a room size installation of hand crafted ceramic white chains measuring in length from five to thirty feet. The idea is to play with the notion that the laid out chains could be perceived to protect or restrain the sacred environment created by Julia. The show runs through May 2nd, so stop by if you can. Also, if you loved Julia’s One Of A […]

Openings: “Martha Cooper : Remix” @ Carmichael Gallery

Saturday night, Martha Cooper (interviewed) launched a special group exhibition at LA’s Carmichael Gallery. If the upcoming Art In The Streets Exhibition at the MOCA is this year’s Superbowl for street & urban art, then consider this show the preceding playoffs. Many of the players in the monster retrospective made an appearance to pay homage to the godmother of street art photography. Cooper’s curated list of artists were asked to artistically reinterpret her iconic urban photographs and included AM favorites like Futura, Swoon, Jose Parla, […]

Openings: Patrick Martinez – “Hustlemania” @ Known Gallery

Patrick Martinez recently opened his newest series of works entitled Hustlemania at LA’s Known Gallery. Patrick draws our attention to the everyday things that most may not think is conventionally beautiful. Using his environment as inspiration, he often focuses on the phenomenology of his surroundings to peak the interest of his audience. Exhibiting in the heart of Los Angeles’ Fairfax district, it looks like Patrick figured out a way to meld the hustle and flow from the City of Angels with the gallery world of […]

The launch events took place over two nights and drew numerous notables from the fashion and art scene.
