Openings: Moniker Art Fair 2010

One of the main reasons AM traveled to London this year was to catch the premiere of the Moniker Art Fair. The opening night was packed from the moment the doors were lifted with what seemed to be everyone we knew in the scene in attendance. The inaugural fair focused on bringing attention to the rising urban art movement and included galleries such as New Image Art, Carmichael Gallery, Black Rat Projects, CampBarbossa, Galleria Patricia Armocida and Anonymous Gallery. In part one of our studio visit to Faile’s Williamsburg workshop, we showed you the digs where the magic happens and also took a close look at the uniquely crafted building blocks that form their new works. Our friend RJ at Vandalog has been working on this project all summer and we’re happy to announce that his project is now in full bloom. Tapping into some of his favorite street artists, RJ has created a very limited edition (less than 40) screenprint shirts to launch his new Vandalog clothing label. It seems that many great artists we know are in a constant state of work and improvement when it comes to their craft. After a exhibition at the Chateau de Versailles in France, it appears that Superflat master Takashi Murakami is already diving deep into work (shirt off of course) in preparation for his November 13th show at the Gagosian in Rome. 2010 looked to be a light year for the Brooklyn collective known as Faile (featured). Initially it was just a simple show at a “little gallery” known as Gagosian. Then in Feburary, a hand crafted arcade experience popped up in London. By Spring they created a new arcade show in NYC. Summer brought them to PortugalArte ‘10 where they installed an iconic “temple” in vintage Faile fashion. AM has been keeping an eye on artist Will Barras for some time now and we’re excited to see he has an upcoming show entitled “Bad Reception” at London’s StolenSpace. Will’s use of fluid motion in combination with urban techniques create striking works that blur the line between the abstract and the real. Streets: El Mac Mural in Chelsea

When El Mac was in town for his show “The Humble and Sublime” at Joshua Liner Gallery last week, he also laid down some work in the streets of New York. He labored through both rain and shine to create this little gem on the corner of 10th Ave & 26th St. in Chelsea. We like the radiant glow that this piece exudes. Preview: “Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time” @ Whitney Museum

The Whitney Museum will be holding an exhibition to feature Edward Hopper and many of his contemporary peers from 1900-1940. Focusing on this period of time when massive changes were occurring in America, artists such as Ed captured the sweeping transformation across the nation in both rural and urban areas. In case you’re wondering who else is a fan, maybe you’ll remember Banksy taking a page out of Hopper’s famous “Night Hawks” (here). This show opens October 28th. Check out a preview after the jump.
