Openings: Kenny Scharf & Dearraindrops – “Hot Glue Hullabaloo” @ The Hole Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Kenny Scharf & Dearraindrop’s Hot Glue Hullabaloo at The Hole Gallery. The collaborative show between Kenny and the Virginia Beach collective was a logical one – both are known for their creative and colorful approaches to create works outside the box. Kenny transformed the inside of The Hole into a replica of the “cosmic cavern” from his home which has the effect of transported viewers back to the happy and trippy days of the 60’s & 70’s. Derraindrop chimed […]

Kenny Scharf Mural on Houston & Bowery Completed

Completed just in time for the city’s art lovers to view before they embark for Miami, Kenny Scharf’s mural is up on the wall where his close friend and collaborator Keith Haring famously had his.  Once a space where Deitch Projects artists shared their art with the public, it is now curated by Kathy Grayson of The Hole (where Scharf is currently exhibiting).  The piece features the artist’s crowded colorful cast of characters all squeezed in tight.  See it before you take off for Basel, […]

Takashi Murakami @ Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (New York)

When fall began, we kicked off coverage of Takashi Murakami’s concept to create two giant floats in the image of his beloved studio mascots Kaikai & Kiki for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Today, he wished us Happy Thanksgiving from New York as he surprised spectators by donning a flower costume rolling on a little float decorated with his famous “Jellyfish Eyes”. Check out Takashi-san’s creations owning Time Square after the jump!

Streets: Kenny Scharf (New York)

The changing of the guards is in progress as the legendary mural space on the corner of Bowery & Houston in New York’s SoHo is set to undergo a new transformation under the spray cans of street legend Kenny Scharf. The iconic wall which housed the Haring tribute transitioned to Os Gemeos to Shepard Fairey to Barry McGee and now back full circle to Kenny Scharf who was a peer and friend to the late Keith Haring. AM caught up with Kenny at the spot […]

Openings: Hush – “Found” with White Walls in New York

On Friday, AM attended the opening of Hush’s (interviewed) latest show Found in New York’s hip Lower East Side. The pop-up show hosted by White Walls Gallery was a quick drive-by as it only lasted the weekend. Held in the beautiful Angel Orensanz Foundation for Contemporary Art, the historic synagogue was transformed into a grand display with the help of some creative lighting and Hush’s “Geisha Portrait” series which we previewed recently in a studio visit. The opening night was packed with fans from the […]

Openings: Frieze Art Fair 2010 – Part II

We saw a lot at Frieze and we have to note that every fair we’ve been to Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin never fails to make in impact with their bold exhibits. Amongst the bustle we caught impressive works by Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Aya Takano, Tracy Emin, David La Chapelle and even a surprise appearance by Faile.

Dr. Romanelli x Oliver Peoples: “Dr. Goodfellow” Sculpture

Check this figure designed by our friend Dr. Romanelli and optics retailer Oliver Peoples. Inspired by a mythical sprite known to many as “Puck”, the figure blends a mix of the vintage Victorian style with Dr. Romanelli’s fresh eye to revamp this collaboration into a modern classic. The details on the figure are pretty well thought out as we spy the miniature stethoscope, scissors, and of course the obligatory chained monocle. It comes in a very limited edition of ten – six bronze that ages into into a […]

Rae’s work consists of pop-art mixed media pieces created from the vivid colored plastic and labels of laundry detergent bottles, as well as black and white photography of everyday people. The combination of styles exemplifies the energy and diversity of […]

Streets: Hush – “Found” with White Walls in New York

Hush (interviewed) is in the Big Apple and already making his mark on the Lower East Side. In preparation for his upcoming show “Found” on Friday (Nov 19th) at the White Walls‘ pop up location of Angel Orensanz Foundation For Contemporary Art, the UK street artist is busy elevating his exposure to the streets of New York. Braving windy conditions of up to 50 mph, AM and Hush caught a (legit) wall on the corner of Stanton & Norfolk to display a live painting session of one of […]
