Openings: Hi-Fructose Group Show – “Overdose” @ Copro Gallery

“Overdose” (previewed) opened this past Saturday at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. Upon entering the gallery, you will notice several great pieces from “Overdose” on display in the gallery’s front room. The majority of the exhibition’s body of work is displayed in the gallery’s main room. A table was set up over in the smaller wing of the gallery for the Hi-Fructose Collected Edition 1 book signing. The Kehinde Wiley show opened last night to a packed house at Roberts & Tilton in the Culver City Art District. This show focused on the third segment of his “World Stage” project where Wiley immerses himself in the culture of a country by taking residence there and “street-casting” it’s inhabitants. Yesterday, David Choe unveiled his latest series of works in Beijing at PYO Gallery. As you saw in the preview, David hit the streets of China hard. David showed ingenuity by utilizing whatever he could get his hands on to create complex pieces out of asian cargo and shopping bags, local “yuan” currency, vintage communist era posters and even a badminton shuttlecock! Openings: Phil Frost/Gary Taxali @ Jonathan LeVine

AM was out in NYC’s Chelsea tonight to attend the preview of the Phil Frost and Gary Taxali shows at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. For his show, Frost focused on works on paper, filling the main gallery with dozens of mixed-media pieces of various sizes, all emblazoned with his unique mix of mask-like faces and stylized text. Taxali had the back room, and presented an energetic collection of illustrative work. Check out images of both, after the jump.

Kehinde Wiley Lecture @ Getty Center

In a little warm-up for his upcoming show at Roberts & Tilton, Kehinde Wiley gave a well-received lecture at the Getty Center last night.Â He impressed the crowd as an eloquent speaker and accompanied his talk with some well prepared slides.Â Especially interesting were his photo reference comparisons to his final paintings where he “street-cast” strangers off the street to pose for his paintings. It’s currently 7:15 pm in Sydney, Australia at the MTV Gallery where Ian Francis’ new exhibition (previewed) has just opened it’s doors to numerous excited Aussies ‘Down Unda.’ Since most of the world may not be able to attend the pop-up Semi-Permanent exhibition as our friends in the southern hemisphere, AM thought it would be nice to share an online viewing of Ian’s latest body of work. A few weeks ago we reported about the latest Damien Hirst “Artist Series” skate decks being releasing by Supreme.
