The show was curated by Choque Cultural in association with Jonathan LeVine and features work from some of Brazil’s best: Calma, Carlos Dias, MZK, Ramon Martins, Silvana Mello, Speto, Titi Freak and Zezão. Normally a white-walled gallery space, Scion Installation LA was completely transformed by the artists, each adding their own unique touch of SÃo Paulo’s color, vibrancy, grittiness, and energy with work that had influences of street […]

Weekend Chelsea gallery stroll

Its been a while, but this weekend, AM was lucky to be able to take the day to stroll around Chelsea, popping into any and every gallery that looked interesting. Over the course of the afternoon, two shows stood out: Lisa Yuskavage at David Zwirner and Paul Morrison at Cheim & Read. Yuskavage quickly became well known in the mid to late 1990’s for her overtly sexualized portraits of shapely women. For this show, her second for Zwirner, Yuskavage includes such portraits, some with faces […]

On the streets: Faile vs. Supreme?

Looks like Faile has been working overtime in the streets of NYC at the expense of Supreme’s Spring ad campaign. Numerous ad posters were altered and remixed across the streets of New York. Faile replaced rocker Lou Reed’s “grill” with their infamous tiger face and also replaced the classic Supreme “box logo” on center of the shirt with the Collective’s catch phrase: “vanity”. Apparently this “remix” is a urban retaliation to Supreme’s annual guerrilla-spam ad campaigns. These campaigns allegedly consists of plastering numerous posters/pasters all […]

Openings: Yoshitomo Nara in NYC

Japanese pop art superstar Yoshitomo Nara opened his new eponymously titled solo show (teased) in NYC last night. Similar to his last several exhibitions, Nara collaborated with the design firm graf to construct a gallery installation, this time consisting of two tree-like, fairytale houses: one containing a mini studio space and the other filled with stuffed animals. Of course, the show also contained plenty of new drawings and paintings of Nara’s trademark petulant girls. And special for the opening, Japanese musical groups MAGO and Oorutaichi, […]

On the streets: New Banksy

A crispy new Banksy just popped up in Gillett Square (Hackney, UK). It seems that the recent “hammering” which the urban art market took in this week’s auctions (covered) have clearly not affected Banksy’s approach at all. It goes to show that his meteoric rise in popularity the past few years have not gotten to his head. His unique perspective on our world today are not driven by speculators or gallerists. Whether the art market is up or down, Sir Banksy reminds us that why his works belongs on the streets and not […]

Teaser: Yoshitomo Nara @ Marianne Boesky Gallery & Screening of Nara Documentary @ Royal/T

Fresh off his LA show last December (covered), Yoshitomo Nara will be opening an exhibition tomorrow night (6-8 pm) at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York. It sounds like a fantastic show as Nara will be showing new paintings and drawings as well as more large-scale sculptures with his collaborative group YNG. The structures are described as “two immense sculptures that recall stylized tannenbaums, with their roof shingling evoking exaggerated tree needles. Small cut-out windows and hanging lights punctuate the sculptures, providing them with […]
