Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Ryden Preview

Another reason to hit up the major art fairs is the opportunities to see the new gems from Mark Ryden in person. For this year’s Miami rendition of Art Basel, the lowbrow painter will be bringing at least two originals with him to the party – Main Street USA (seen above) for the Michael Kohn booth (Booth K10) and Pinxit Jajo (seen after the jump) for the Paul Kasmin booth (Booth B14).

A couple weekends ago in Chelsea, we attended this year’s Editions|Artists’ Book Fair, which brought together contemporary fine art print and art book publishers and dealers from around the world. There were so many amazing editions to see, including a new limited edition print by Fred Tomaselli created especially for this year’s fair. See all our pics from the fair, after the jump.

This year during Art Basel Miami, DB Burkeman—who brought us Stickers: Stuck Up Piece of Crap (covered) and The Sticker Wall (covered)—will be presenting Slap Happy at Wynwood Walls (covered). For the project, DB and Paul Weston invited 75 artists and designers from around the globe to create a same-sized black and white sticker. Among the invitees participating are such notable names as Aiko, Shepard Fairey, Anthony Lister, Chris Johanson, Stanley Donwood and The Designers Republic, just to name a few. FIAC Coverage

Following the Frieze week in London (covered here), AM headed off to Paris to visit the FIAC, the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain in Paris at the Grand Palais, host to 168 galleries. While Frieze focuses exclusively on contemporary art, the FIAC also combines early 20th century modern art with the contemporary. Of interest, Karl Lagerfeld designed the booth of Zurich’s Gallery Gmurzynska for the Rebels curated by Isabelle Bscher and featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol as well as Banksy and Scott Campbell. This week, our Art Focus is on Philadelphia-based Matthew Cox, whose series of medical x-rays and embroidery recently caught our eyes. The Parsons and Otis trained artist has taken radiographs and stitched back in his imagined content partially over the skeletal elements leading to an intriguing new mesh of reality and the imaginary. Beyond Eden 2011 Overview

A couple weekends ago, along with PULSE and Art Platform, Los Angeles hosted another art fair, Beyond Eden, at the LA Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. This third rendition of the annual event drew over 5000 visitors who witnessed a special special presentation honoring the art and accomplishments of Anthony Ausgang as well as took in the offerings of Thinkspace, La Luz De Jesus, Copro Gallery, T.A.G.
