Over the weekend, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked off the festivities with a show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, something they have done for the last two years before this (see 2015 & 2014). As in the past, artists were asked to contribute works that conform to a certain format, leading to a visually congruent and display of artworks. Tomorrow (February 7th) will mark the third time Thinkspace has curated a show in association with POW! WOW! Hawaii at the Honolulu Museum of Art School (see 2015 & 2014). Previews: Kehinde Wiley – “A New Republic” @ Seattle Art Museum

Starting on February 11th, the Seattle Art Museum will be hosting a solo exhibition from contemporary portrait painter Kehinde Wiley. A New Republic will feature a selection of the American artist’s work that could be said to be a remix of Old Master paintings where the classic European subjects are typically replaced by young urban men of color, playing with ideas of power and breaking down stereotypes. On November 20th, Steve “ESPO” Powers (featured) will be unveiling a site-specific installation for the Brooklyn Museum that he’s calling Coney Island Is Still Dreamland (To a Seagull). The immersive environment will transform the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Gallery with signage and paintings styles that are unique to the seaside community and will also feature the works of Justin Green, Matt Wright, Mike Levy, Dan Murphy, Mike Lee, Mimi Gross, Alexis Ross, Sean Barton, Eric Davis, and Tim Curtis.
