POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Showing: “Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Over the weekend, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked off the festivities with a show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, something they have done for the last two years before this (see 2015 & 2014). As in the past, artists were asked to contribute works that conform to a certain format, leading to a visually congruent and display of artworks. Tomorrow (February 7th) will mark the third time Thinkspace has curated a show in association with POW! WOW! Hawaii at the Honolulu Museum of Art School (see 2015 & 2014). The event will continue their push to further the art of what they call the “New Contemporary Movement” and will include an installation from Aaron Li-Hill. On March 20th, Jonathan Yeo will be unveiling a series of portraits he has been working on with Cara Delevingne at Denmark’s Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in Copenhagen. He choose the English fashion model and actress as his muse because of her ability to change and curate her image in this age of social media. Previews: Kehinde Wiley – “A New Republic” @ Seattle Art Museum

Starting on February 11th, the Seattle Art Museum will be hosting a solo exhibition from contemporary portrait painter Kehinde Wiley. A New Republic will feature a selection of the American artist’s work that could be said to be a remix of Old Master paintings where the classic European subjects are typically replaced by young urban men of color, playing with ideas of power and breaking down stereotypes. Currently at the Mori Art Museum is Takashi Murakami’s The 500 Arhats, surprisingly his first solo show in Japan in over 14 years when it opened. On the 11th of December, the National Gallery Victoria in Melbourne opened a major international exhibition featuring two of the most significant artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries – Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei. On November 20th, Steve “ESPO” Powers (featured) will be unveiling a site-specific installation for the Brooklyn Museum that he’s calling Coney Island Is Still Dreamland (To a Seagull). The immersive environment will transform the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Gallery with signage and paintings styles that are unique to the seaside community and will also feature the works of Justin Green, Matt Wright, Mike Levy, Dan Murphy, Mike Lee, Mimi Gross, Alexis Ross, Sean Barton, Eric Davis, and Tim Curtis.
