The weeks of setup for the POW WOW ’11 in Honolulu culminated in blowout showcase bringing together talent from different parts of the world. People all over Hawaii came to take part in the celebration where performance, photography, graffiti, and fine art intersected. AM attended our first opening at Signal Gallery’s new and much larger space for their Mixed Doubles group exhibition last week. John Squire was probably the first artist we ever collected from ‘art prints’ from back in the late 80’s when he produced Pollack-esque cover art for his band The Stone Roses. AM got a chance to attend the opening of Art Machine at The Hole recently. The collaboration between the gallery and NY fashion collective ALIFE featured a special vending machine where artwork could be purchased and dispensed. We got there before the public was allowed in and watched the final “stocking” of the goods. Following a very robust early February due in part to some very high profile shows opening, things slow a lil’ bit the world over this weekend. A couple weeks back, multifaceted art dynamo David Ellis filled New Image Art with his new body of work Mola Salsa. Featuring a more figurative collection of paintings, the work also maintained hints of Ellis’ geometric patterns and linework. Last December, Brooklyn-based Elbow-Toe (interviewed) took his wonderful “cut paper paintings” to the Warrington Museum in the UK. Due Date, billed to be his first solo showing across the pond, explores his “preconceived notions of parenthood and the opportunities for growth that come through that process.” Featuring a set of images on panels and a set of images on paper, each series provides a contrast between staged environments and stark isolation.
