One of the booths we were excited to see at the NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) art fair during Art Basel Week was by New York Collective The Still House Group. Interestingly enough when we arrived, all we found was a cryptic Xerox copy machine asking us to press the button. Openings: Saber – “The Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (London)

After Newcastle, LA-based graffiti artist SABER (interviewed) launched the second installment of his first European solo show The Ugly American at The Outsiders in London. Suffering from epilepsy and being denied healthcare, the politically engaged artist decided to voice some issues and battles for universal care by attacking and transforming iconic images of US and Union Jack flags, using found packing crates. Saber’s abstract paintings, made with layered collages and painted paper, combine harmoniously to form a delicate texture with his strong and powerful sharp signature lines. By now, you’ve all heard the monumental buzz that this Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition I Who Have Arrived In Heaven has created with lines that exponentially grew from 30-45 mins to 4-6 hours in the course of less than a month. During Art Basel Week, Vanessa Beecroft x Kanye West took part in the Affordable Care group show (covered here) curated by Flaunt Magazine in Miami’s Mana Wynwood Complex. This unique project pulled together two controversial artists (Beecroft & West) that have long drawn curiosity and criticism in their careers. Vanessa Beecroft, an accomplished peformance artist often utilizes live female models (often nude) as well as the audience and their genuine/awkward interactions to illustrate political, historical or social themes in the context of the location. Earlier this month, the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland and curator Sven Davis brought together two young artists for a joint show entitled FRAGMENTS. The Bay Area – based Ryan De La Hoz uses “motifs in his work such as television static and ancient Greek imagery” that play with ideas of destruction and perception of which his distorted hand manipulated prints we really enjoy (seen above). Nike Vault at the STAPLES Center recently launched The Kobe Prelude Experience. For eight weeks, they are showcasing Kobe inspired artwork by different artists, and every Saturday they will unveil a new piece. Each piece is tied to a key moment in Kobe’s career. LA-based artist, Allison “Hueman” Torneros, unveiled the first piece in the eight part series the other night. Nike commissioned her to create a surreal piece inspired by his 81 point game.
