Frieze 2010: Ryan McGinley @ Team Gallery

The Frieze Art Fair is soon upon us. Occupying Team Gallery’s booth at Frieze will be a group show consisting of a few of their represented artists. Among them is Ryan McGinley, who will be showing photos from his most recent road trip, as well as more b&w studio portraits of models with exotic animals.  AM readers might also be interested in Banks Violette, who will be showing his first large-scale, text-based installation. The piece seems to announce a impending apocalypse, so prepare yourselves. More […]

Studio Visit / Preview: Augustine Kofie – ‘Retrofitted and Other Forms of Vintage Futurism’ @ White Walls

Last month, graffiti writer, illustrator, designer and fine artist Kofie’One / Augustine Kofie kindly granted AM access to his studio spaces in the Filipinotown district of Los Angeles. Kofie was preparing for “Retrofitted and Other Forms of Vintage Futurism”, his debut solo exhibition at White Walls Gallery in San Francisco which opens on Saturday, October 9th. Those familiar with Kofie’s work will immediately recognize his new canvases. They’ve retained the style which has become his trademark: an architectural feel, an emphasis on precision and balance, […]

Teaser: Lazarides – “Hell’s Half Acre” @ The Old Vic Tunnel

Opening next Tuesday, Hell’s Half Acre, is a unique concept show organized by London-based Lazarides around the theme of Dante’s “Inferno”, interpreted as “hell” in the influential author’s Italian tongue. Fittingly hosted deep within the underground catacombs known as The Old Vic Tunnels, the impressive roster of artists – including such LAZ favorites as Vhils, Antony Micallef, Ian Francis and David Choe, just to name a few – has been tasked with interpreting the nine circles of hell as postulated within the epic 14th-century poem […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Deedee Cheriel – ‘Abracadabra’ @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

AM recently had the pleasure of dropping in on Deedee Cheriel at her sunny home and studio in the Echo Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles.  Her latest exhibition, ‘Abracadabra’, opens Saturday, October 9th at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in LA alongside the new show by Mark Whalen (Kill Pixie), ‘Paralleled Opposites’. Cheriel uses animals to portray emotion, and the characters in her narrative pieces are often reminiscent of the anthromorphic deities depicted by the ancient Egyptians.  She describes the exhibition’s title as referring to the transformation […]

Preview: Mark Whalen / Kill Pixie “Paralleled Opposites” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

AM just got a peek at the new paintings that Mark Whalen (you may also know him as his alter-ego Kill Pixie) is presenting on Saturday October 9th at Merry Karnowksy Gallery in Los Angeles, and we had to share some of the geometric landscape goodness with you! Mark’s latest body of work is entitled “Paralleled Opposites”, perhaps as a recognition of how his artistic journey and career to date has developed from his graffiti beginnings into the contemporary fine artist we see today. Whalen’s […]

Beyond Eden ’10: Shark Toof Installation

Beyond Eden is this weekend and from what we’ve seen, it looks to be one amazing event.  LeBasse Projects is one of the galleries participating in the 2-day fair and one of the artists they will be showing is Los Angeles’ own Shark Toof.  The hustling hometown hero, whose prolific work can be seen all around the streets of the city,  presents a large scale installation as well as a selection of pieces.  Come by this weekend and see his amazing work when the fair […]

Preview and Giveaway: “Selections from The New World” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Earlier this year, AM brought you coverage of Corey Helford Gallery’s “Art From The New World” summer exhibition at Bristol’s City Museum and Art Gallery in the UK. It was an exciting exhibition and a rare chance for UK art lovers to meet the group of artists in one place on our side of the pond. Since the doors opened, over 60,000 visitors attended the exhibit to get a taste of the art. Now it’s time for LA to have the favor returned. A selection […]

Baby Tattooville ’10 – Robert Williams Roast

Baby Tattooville 2010 featured a special tribute to Robert Williams. From helping pave the way for young artists to founding JUXTAPOZ magazine, Robert Williams has been an enormous influence on alternative art. That influence is immeasurable. Still, to get a better understanding of the artist who brought the term “low brow” into the fine arts lexicon, Baby Tattooville assembled a roast with a panel of some of the individuals closest to Mr. Williams. During the Roast, Williams was subjected to good-natured ridicule by friends Mat […]
