Preview: Kehinde Wiley – “Black Light” @ Deitch Projects

New York contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley, known for painting urban African American males in classical poses taken from art history, is set to open a new show at Deitch Projects next weekend. The show opening September 3rd, entitled “Black Light,” is an exhibition of 17 photographs most likely taken from the similarly named book from Powerhouse Books. The Sea No Evil Charity Art Show is again in full swing. This year’s show is bigger than ever with a large group of artist donating their works to benefit the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. As we previously mentioned, opening tonight in Seattle is “Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Monster,” Travis Louieâ€™s (interviewed) solo at the esteemed Roq La Rue gallery.Â The artist will be in attendance to chat with fans as well as sign his new book “Curiosities” like he did in LA recently and in SDCC.Â On display will be his portraiture mix of wild-haired intense women and distinguished monsters in Victorian guise. Yesterday, AM had the pleasure of visiting Shawn Barber as he was putting on the final touches of his solo show “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots” at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery (teased). Shawn’s still life paintings and overall representation of tattoo culture look even more impressive in person. The show opens tonight, Saturday the 15th, and we for one can’t wait to check it out in it’s entirety. Process and installation pics after the jump.

At 7pm tonight, Thinkspace Gallery plays host for the opening of “ModArt â€“ A Celebration of 20 Issues and All That Lay Ahead,” a group show curated by the team at European basedÂ ModArt Magazine.
