Preview: Lola & Super School @ Copro Gallery

A couple interesting shows are opening this weekend at Copro Gallery (formerly Copro Nason Gallery) at the Bergamot Station complex in Santa Monica. The first is “Natural Beauties,” a solo show from Lola after her recent successful showing at Corey Helford Gallery. Nara Arrested For Graffiti Before Boesky Opening

Yoshitomo Nara decided to big up his street cred before his Marianne Boesky opening by putting up some graffiti at the Union Square subway station in NY. Unfortunately, since the arrest of Shepard Fairey before his opening at the Boston ICA, throwing prominent artists in jail seems to have become all the rage. Matzu and Joshua Liner Gallery were nice enough to invite AM for a sneak “peak” at Matzu’s full-gallery solo show, Glancing at the Twin Peaks, opening in NYC this Friday. Matzu and his helpers have been working around the clock to transform the space with paintings, murals and sculptures into one cohesive installation. AM was on hand at the opening of SÃo Paulo at Scion Installation LA this past Saturday. The show was curated by Choque Cultural in association with Jonathan LeVine and features work from some of Brazil’s best: Calma, Carlos Dias, MZK, Ramon Martins, Silvana Mello, Speto, Titi Freak and ZezÃ£o. Its been a while, but this weekend, AM was lucky to be able to take the day to stroll around Chelsea, popping into any and every gallery that looked interesting. Over the course of the afternoon, two shows stood out: Lisa Yuskavage at David Zwirner and Paul Morrison at Cheim & Read. One of most anticipated shows of the year is coming up at the end of this month at Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles. On the streets: Faile vs. Supreme?

Looks like Faile has been working overtime in the streets of NYC at the expense of Supreme’s Spring ad campaign. Numerous ad posters were altered and remixed across the streets of New York. Faile replaced rocker Lou Reed’s “grill” with their infamous tiger face and also replaced the classic Supreme “box logo” on center of the shirt with the Collective’s catch phrase: “vanity”. Japanese pop art superstar Yoshitomo Nara opened his new eponymously titled solo show (teased) in NYC last night. Similar to his last several exhibitions, Nara collaborated with the design firm graf to construct a gallery installation, this time consisting of two tree-like, fairytale houses: one containing a mini studio space and the other filled with stuffed animals. A crispy newÂ BanksyÂ just popped up in Gillett Square (Hackney, UK). It seems that the recent “hammering” which the urban art market took inÂ thisÂ week’s auctions (covered) have clearly not affected Banksy’sÂ approach at all.
