Streets: Kamea Hadar – “Hapa” (Hawaii)

Recently in Honolulu, Kamea Hadar unveiled a mural honoring Barack Obama, a former resident of Hawaii, for his service as the 44th President of the United States. The locally-based painter and also co-lead director of POW! WOW! Hawaii, entitled the mural Hapa, a reference to both the POTUS and artist’s mixed heritage. Seen in the background is some text from a speech that Obama gave in 2008 in Philadelphia where he spoke about his background and of racial equality. For those interested, the wall is located […]

Art Focus: Benjamin Garcia

The next artist we want to share with you in our Art Focus series is Benjamin Garcia and his series of textured portraits. The Venezuelan artist’s multi-layered technique is utilized perfectly to render the disjointed transition between the conscious and the unconscious and seems also to reveal some of the inner psyches of his subjects. He currently has some of his oil paintings on view with Smash Gallery at the LA Art Show and has contributed something to the upcoming 3rd annual POW! WOW! Exploring The New Contemporary […]

Rewind: Nov 23 – Dec 22

For out latest Rewind feature we are highlighting a video from INSA featuring his work with Pepsi in creating a moving peace sign (formed of painted cars) that can be seen from space. Other notable videos include: Jeff Gillette working in the desert. Timelapse of Odeith at work. Daniel Arsham’s Future Relic 04. An online video installation […]

Recap: Usugrow @ Woolloomooloo Xhibit

After a solo last month in Japan (covered), Usugrow followed it up by opening an exhibition in Taipei while there for POW! WOW! Taiwan. The showing presented by Remix & G-SHOCK at the Woolloomooloo Xhibit space featured the Japanese artist’s characteristic mix of urban calligraphy & Los Angeles “cholo” subculture. He even found time to demonstrate his skills while there on an in situ piece and on the walls. Photo credit: Ben Roazen (via Hypebeast). Discuss Usugrow here.

Rewind: Jul 14 – Oct 25

This latest edition of our Rewind article is headlined by a trailer for a new short film by JR (interviewed) starring Robert De Niro. Entitled Ellis, the footage follows the Academy Award Winning actor as he stars as an immigrant whose pursuit of a new life expired at Ellis Island. Traversing an abandoned hospital complex, De Niro is confronted with ghostly archival photographs of immigrants and hospital patients taken over a century ago pasted up by the JR, part of the French artist’s Unframed series of works. […]

James Jean x Momofuku Commission

After painting a mural last month for POW! WOW! Long Beach (covered), James Jean (interviewed) has started work on a new project. Utilizing large panels, the gifted painter looks to be prepping a large installation for friend and chef David Chang’s Momofuku restaurant group. The name can be loosely translated to “lucky peach” which explains why Jean used the peach as his focus for the commissioned works. We’ll be looking forward to updating you on the completed project soon… Photo credit: Brandon Shigeta. Discuss James Jean here.

Rewind: Jun 7 – Jul 13

Headlining our Rewind feature this time is a short film documenting Adam Neate’s (interviewed) time in Beijing where he joined street calligraphers in Beihai Park. They all practice the art of DiShu, or water calligraphy where the ephemeral forms disappear as it evaporates. CYRCLE x Drew Merritt, Vyal and Mear One working on a VNA project in the desert A feature on Handiedan. A review of the POW! WOW! mural program for SXSW. Kidult […]

Fresh off painting a mural for POW! WOW! Long Beach, PUSH got right back to work on his solo opening on July 11th at Known Gallery. Remember To Forget will just be the latest showing with the Los Angeles gallery through the years and once again highlight the MSK-affiliated writer’s signature geometric-form based imagery. Take a look at a teaser video here and make plans to check out the show tomorrow night if you are interested… Photo credit: Brent Broza. Discuss PUSH here.

Openings: “Vitality and Verve” @ Long Beach Museum of Art

Leading up to the opening of the Vitality and Verve: Transforming the Urban Landscape exhibition last night at the Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA), we had the opportunity for a preview look at some the murals being created (shared with you here & here). From what we saw, we were really excited to see the culmination of something historic and what we have never seen to this scale before with you – a museum exhibition featuring epic indoor murals from a strong roster of what is a mix of […]
