Teaser: “Street/Studio 2.0” @ Irvine Contemporary

For street artists, location has always been as important, if not more so, than the artwork itself. The site informs the conception – and perception – of the work down to it’s very core. On November 6th, Irvine Contemporary will explore this unique relationship with a group of artists that have been bringing the street into the studio for years. With such street art legends as José Parlá, Shepard Fairey, SWOON, James Marshall (Dalek), David Ellis, Romon Yang (Rostarr) and Gaia, Street/Studio 2.0 will spotlight […]

Teaser: Barry McGee Mural (New York)

So, observant street art fans in New York must have noticed by now that Shepard Fairey’s much vandalized “These Parties Disgust Me” mural (done in conjunction with his “May Day” show at Deitch) has been covered with the scaffolding below rebuilt. Although there has been some speculation the preserved Os Gemeos mural underneath would once again re-emerge at the Houston and Bowery location, what AM has confirmed may be even more exciting…  The site will be a new canvas for another street legend soon – […]

Openings “Beyond Punk” @ Signal Gallery

If you’ve ever been to Signal Gallery, you’ll know it’s not the largest gallery space out there, so when we heard that the guest list had been closed at 250 people for the “Beyond Punk” exhibition opening due to the high demand to get on the guest list, we knew that we would be in for a squeeze! Typical Thursday evening opening nights in London tend to be busy, but the crowds usually move between different exhibitions. Not so for this show. When we turned up, […]

LA-based artist Philip Lumbang, who developed his craft as an assistant to Shepard Fairey (featured), recently opened a show at Giant Robot 2 on Sawtelle St.  After satisfying some of his needs for working on the streets, Philip brings his signature “polite bear” character indoors for a new body of work entitled “Adventure! This time, the artist whose hand-painted and subject matter provide a stark contrast to the often testosterone fueled world of street art, has put together a collection of works on wood and […]

Highlights: Recommended Openings for this Weekend

With the quiet summer art season in full effect, the list of recommended shows is shorter than usual but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any quality shows. For example, take a look at the possible crazy installs coming up for David Choong Lee as he gets ready for his show at LeBasse Projects this weekend. As the art world becomes increasingly year-round, eventually there will probably be no lulls in the calendar at all. More listings after the jump…
