Streets: Invader (Los Angeles)

It looks like while he was in town for the BEYOND THE STREETS exhibition (covered), Invader added to his prolific body of work on the streets of Los Angeles that stretches back over a decade. For what he calls the 9th wave of invasion of the LA, the French artist got up 29 new mosaics throughout the city including a sweet piece featuring The Dude placed perfectly outside a building that has a bowling alley. As part of the $620 million “Dust to Gold” renovation at the Palms Casino Resort, an impressive collection ranging from blue-chip works to street art murals was acquired, commissioned, and deployed throughout the hotel. Tomorrow (May 24th) in Hong Kong’s Gagosian outpost, Alex Israel will be opening his exhibition entitled New Waves. For his first solo in the Chinese city-state, he is taking a truly multi-media approach to presenting work inspired by surfer culture and growing up in the sunny metropolis of Los Angeles. Streets: Telmo Miel x James Bullough (Berlin)

Spending a week together in Berlin, Telmo Miel and James Bullough worked on a stunning new piece (located Bernburger Straße 35) that blends the work of the street artists together perfectly. Painting the large wall for the Berlin Mural Fest with the “Unity” concept proposed by Urban Nation in mind, the Dutch duo mixed their patchy & segmented imagery with the locally-based Bullough’s glitchy portraiture in a way the matches their styles up amazingly well. After a provocative installation on the rooftops of London back in March bringing attention to mental health issues and suicide, Mark Jenkins (interviewed) will be returning for an encore at Lazinc. Last weekend, Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) opened his latest solo with KP Projects in West Hollywood entitled The Escape Artist. This was also the name of the large showstopper, the locally-based artist’s painting that took center stage while exploring the above and below water creatures of his world. Arsham/Fieg Gallery in New York currently has a show from Mark Whalen on display entitled Grab Bag. The towering stack pieces are examples of the increasing more sculptural work that he has been experimenting with recently. Whalen further explains – “Lately, I have been formulating new relationships with sculptural work. Grab Bag is a new series of multi-dimensional work that presents non-traditional totems representing life’s folly. Previews: Evah Fan – “Inside, Outside, Come Around” @ Park Life

This Friday (May 24th), Evah Fan will be opening Inside, Outside, Come Around, her new show at Park Life in San Francisco. For this exhibition, the locally-based artist has created a handful of window studies for the gallery space, creating “windows” in a small windowless room. The premise of the new body of work as well as the imagery once again highlights the sense of play and whimsy that can often be seen in Fan’s work.
