Teaser: “Street/Studio 2.0” @ Irvine Contemporary

For street artists, location has always been as important, if not more so, than the artwork itself. The site informs the conception – and perception – of the work down to it’s very core. On November 6th, Irvine Contemporary will explore this unique relationship with a group of artists that have been bringing the street into the studio for years. With such street art legends as José Parlá, Shepard Fairey, SWOON, James Marshall (Dalek), David Ellis, Romon Yang (Rostarr) and Gaia, Street/Studio 2.0 will spotlight […]

Openings: Fred Tomaselli @ The Brooklyn Museum

Last week, the Brooklyn Museum opened a mid-career survey of the work of Brooklyn-based artist Fred Tomaselli. Tomaselli—who grew up in Southern California, but has been working in Williamsburg since the ’80s—is known for his exciting mixed-media paintings, created by collaging figures and patterns from images of plants, birds and body parts clipped from nature field guides and magazines. Tomaselli also incorporates actual pharmaceutical pills into his works, before covering them in clear resin and then painting over top. The result is totally unique, combining […]

Teaser: Lazarides – “Hell’s Half Acre” @ The Old Vic Tunnel

Opening next Tuesday, Hell’s Half Acre, is a unique concept show organized by London-based Lazarides around the theme of Dante’s “Inferno”, interpreted as “hell” in the influential author’s Italian tongue. Fittingly hosted deep within the underground catacombs known as The Old Vic Tunnels, the impressive roster of artists – including such LAZ favorites as Vhils, Antony Micallef, Ian Francis and David Choe, just to name a few – has been tasked with interpreting the nine circles of hell as postulated within the epic 14th-century poem […]

One of the finest galleries in Los Angeles, Regen Projects, recently opened a show of “New Paintings” by Lari Pittman. More after the jump…

Installation: Filthy Luker in Quito, Equador

You may have seen our recent coverage of D*Face’s outdoor activities in Quito, Equador as part of the ‘9no Festival de Arte en la Calle’, and as a natural follow-up, AM now takes a look at some images that UK Urban Interventionist Filthy Luker sent us from Quito. Luker’s huge inflatable sculptures are often seen as culture jamming on a grand scale, and some of these familiar forms look stunning set against the South American backdrop. A couple months ago, AM attended a pretty epic group show, “Eurotrash”, at the temporary Lazarides location in Los Angeles that included Irish painter, Conor Harrington (interviewed). It seems Conor is already preparing for his next project put on by Laz and Tunnel 228 this time – “Hell’s Half Acre”. The exhibition staged in the labyrinth beneath London’s Waterloo station will be themed on Dante’s Inferno (like Luke Chueh’s 999 show) and will include other artists like Micallef, Jonathan Yeo, Vhils, Paul Insect, Mark Jenkins, […]
