Good artists borrow, great artists steal. ~Pablo Picasso Coinciding with Art Basel Miami 2009, the Rubell Family Collection opened their latest exhibition, entitled Beg, Borrow, and Steal. The exhibition, filling the entire 45,000 sq. ft. museum, consists of 260 works by 74 artists of different generations and examines the role of appropriation throughout modern and contemporary art. One month after Andy Warhol‘s 200 One Dollar Bills sells for $43.8 million at auction, The Economist has reported that his Eight Elvises painting sold privately for $100 million– a number that only Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning and Gustav Klimt has achieved for a single sale. Openings: “Pop Life” @ Tate Modern

Last week, Tate Modern opened the doors to a highly anticipated group show based on Andy Warhol’s famous quote: good business is the best art. An ensemble made up of the top names in the contemporary art scene such as Tracey Emin, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Martin Kippenberger, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, Gavin Turk, Richard Prince, and Cosey Fanni Tutti are included in this “Pop Life” exhibition (teased) and many were on hand for the opening reception. A pretty major exhibition, “Pop Life,” is opening this week (October 1st) at the Tate Modern. The exhibition will take Andy Warhol’s famous quote “good business is the best art” as its slogan and re-examine how Warhol and legacy of “Pop Art” has influenced artists in the ways they harnass mass media to promote and create an image for themselves. Now that the Polaroid Corporation has gone into bankruptcy, it leaves behind a legacy not only in your fond childhood memories of snapping away your day’s activities without a care, but also in an important collection of instant photographs by some of the best artists of the 20th century.Â In an effort to raise money to pay their creditors, that collection will soon head into auction courtesy of Sotheby’s, with the remaining pieces to be sold via private sales.
