Armory Week ’10: Independent

Along with the Armory Show and the regular satellite fairs (Pulse, Scope, Volta), this year we also attended Independent – a new fair founded by Elizabeth Dee of the non-profit X Initiative and Darren Flook of London’s Hotel gallery. Even among a week packed with so much to see, Independent certainly stood out. For one, unlike the other fairs we attended, with labyrinthine rows and aisles packed with gallery booths, Independent was set up like a museum exhibition, with several floors of open space organically […]

The acclaimed tattoo artist turned gallery provocateur will bring his revisioning of the US Dollar, along with a host of paintings and drawings, to NYC on April 29th for […]

Preview: The Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Preview images from the much anticipated Barnstormers show at Joshua Liner Gallery have started leaking out and from the looks of the individual pieces from Swoon, David Ellis, Kenji Hirata and others, the exhibition is not surprisingly going to be a stunner. But when all the amazing artists that make up the Barnstormers are together in one place, the total will undoubtedly be so much more than just the sum of the individual pieces. What exactly the end result will look like is anyone’s guess […]

Openings: “Bro Palace” @ Park Life

Running till the end of the month at San Francisco’s Park Life store/gallery is “Bro Palace” a group showing consisting of five of the Bay Area’s more talented illustrators and artists. Skinner (covered), Jay Howell, Porous Walker, Deth P Sun and Ferris Plock have come together from every corner of Northern California, bringing their sardonic wit, whimsical musings, ironic observations, and sometimes a downright offensive style of humor and art together for a beautifully, culturally cohesive though jarringly disparate show of found media, drawings and […]

After 7 years in business, San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery celebrated their anniversary with a stellar solo show by Oakland based artist Aaron Nagel this past weekend. Entitled “Marks” (previewed), Aaron’s show features a bounty of breast-baring buxoms, many of whom have been impaled by arrows, carefully combining a controversial mix of religious iconography and contemporary portraiture, certain to leave a mark on the viewer. Surprisingly enough, Nagel is completely self taught and though his mastery of oils would lead you to assume otherwise, we here […]
