At the Pulse art fair, we were constantly running into new and wonderful art work. Openings: “Multi-Plane Show” @ Corey Helford

AM dropped by Corey Helford Gallery’s Multi-Plane Show opening (previewed) to see how the finished pieces turned out. The gallery came up with the show’s “Multi-Plane” theme by borrowing the idea from past animation techniques where scenes were created using multiple cell layers. When we previewed Yoko Tanaka’s show that ends soon at David B. Smith Gallery, it didn’t register how large some of her paintings actually were until we saw some opening pics. Currently showing at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is a major exhibition from gunpowder artist extraordinaire Cai Guo Qiang. As you can see in the video above, Qiang demonstrated his explosive technique by creating some of his signature pieces (also seen in the “Stages” show) in person. We previewed Ryan McGinley’s works in this year’s Art Basel Miami previously, now prepare yourselves for pictures from Team Gallery’s booth at the fair. No matter how you picture in your heads how the photographs from small compressed jpegs look framed and in person, it can not prepare you for how fantastic they truly look. In addition to Travis Louie’s (interviewed) opening at Shooting Gallery last weekend (covered), the Winter Group Show debuted alongside in the adjoining White Walls gallery. Featuring some heavy hitters such as Shepard Fairey (featured), the Clayton Brothers (featured), and Anthony Lister (interviewed) the group show also boasts some upcoming and very exciting talent, namely artists like Nas Champas, Mark Warren Jacques (interviewed and pictured above), Aaron Nagel, and Casey Gray. Releases: Kehinde Wiley – “The World Stage: Brazil” Hardcover

You may remember when we covered Kehinde Wiley’s show at Roberts & Tilton back in April. Well, the gallery has now released “The World Stage: Brazil” book, a 22 paintings from when Wiley was in the South American country looking for subjects for his signature portraiture. Last week, Amsterdam-based artist Chris Berens made his New York debut with a brilliant solo show at Sloan Fine Art. Chris has been working hard on this show and came through with 39 detailed pieces to show for his efforts. As mentioned in our previews (here & here), Chris utilizes a mixed technique blending his heritage of studying the “old masters” with his unique brushstrokes on photographic paper to create a dream like effect.
