Basel Week Miami ’09 – Laura Ball @ Pulse

At the Pulse art fair, we were constantly running into new and wonderful art work. One of the artists that we were fortunate enough to discover was Laura Ball who showed with both Morgan Lehman Gallery and Kopeikin Gallery. Her primary technique is the use of watercolor with her main subjects being animals and her family members. We found her precision with the dreamy watercolors to be really attractive and one thing that stands out is her use of the blending and bleeding of her watery pigments […]

Art Focus: Liu Bolin

Dubbed “The Invisible Man” and for good reason, Chinese artist Liu Bolin gets his kicks by painting himself into the background with some urban camouflage. His work is a silent protest against his government for it’s persecution of artists. He says – “Some people call me the invisible man, but for me it’s what is not seen in a picture which is really what tells the story. After graduating from school I couldn’t find suitable work and I felt there was no place for me […]

Openings: “Multi-Plane Show” @ Corey Helford

AM dropped by Corey Helford Gallery’s Multi-Plane Show opening (previewed) to see how the finished pieces turned out. The gallery came up with the show’s “Multi-Plane” theme by borrowing the idea from past animation techniques where scenes were created using multiple cell layers. As we mentioned in our preview, each of the featured artists were given a kit of different transparent panes to work on that are overlaid on top of each other to give the final painting more depth and richness. Take a look […]

Openings: Yoko Tanaka @ David B. Smith Gallery

When we previewed Yoko Tanaka’s show that ends soon at David B. Smith Gallery, it didn’t register how large some of her paintings actually were until we saw some opening pics. It’s always nice to have some perspective – in this case – into the soft, delicate, and refined new body of work from Yoko who attended the show in person.  More images  after the jump…

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Hanging Out In The Museum” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum

Currently showing at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is a major exhibition from gunpowder artist extraordinaire Cai Guo Qiang. As you can see in the video above, Qiang demonstrated his explosive technique by creating some of his signature pieces (also seen in the “Stages” show) in person. Far from a one trick pony, Qiang brings with him a body of work similar to what we witnessed at the Guggenheim in New York last year with his “hanging car” installation, “headlong rush of wolves” installation, “sunken […]

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Ryan McGinley @ Team Gallery

We previewed Ryan McGinley’s works in this year’s Art Basel Miami previously, now prepare yourselves for pictures from Team Gallery’s booth at the fair.  No matter how you picture in your heads how the photographs from small compressed jpegs look framed and in person, it can not prepare you for how fantastic they truly look.  McGinley’s photographs were impressive in imagery, color, and size, going up to 108 inches.   According to Jose Freire, owner of Team Gallery, McGinley is meticulous in his perfection.  He […]

While we were there, he showed us a couple pieces he completed for an upcoming group show at Joshua Liner Gallery, including this fantastic piece seen above. The “Further Group Show” will be one of the first group shows in New York of the year, opening on January 9th. Along with Matzu, the lineup includes Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, […]

Openings: Chris Berens – “The Only Living Boy in New York” @ Sloan Fine Art

Last week, Amsterdam-based artist Chris Berens made his New York debut with a brilliant solo show at  Sloan Fine Art. Chris has been working hard on this show and came through with 39 detailed pieces to show for his efforts. As mentioned in our previews (here & here), Chris utilizes a mixed technique blending his heritage of studying the “old masters” with his unique brushstrokes on photographic paper to create a dream like effect. This beautiful hazy effect is something that is further illuminated by seeing his art […]
