Openings: Shepard Fairey – “May Day” @ Deitch Projects (Part 1)

Last weekend, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his latest solo show “May Day” at the legendary Deitch Projects in New York City and effectively shut down a small part of SoHo with the crowds he drew at the opening night festivities. It seemed as though anyone and everyone who had an interest in art was in attendance. Celebrities, artists, gallerists, art affectionados, collectors and loyal fans of Obey Giant came from all over the world to attend the show. Fans traveled from Germany, Memphis, San Francisco, […]

Teaser: Shepard Fairey Mural for Deitch Projects

The famed mural space on Soho’s Houston Street is about to cycle on to the next artist. The last time that we checked in on the location, Os Gemeos had created a masterful work of street art (featured). That has all been buffed now in preparation for Shepard Fairey to hit this central spot with his own brand of urban beautification for his upcoming show at Deitch Projects. AM stopped by Shepard’s Studio Number Two on Friday (more on that later) and got a sneak peak […]

Kathy Grayson to Carry the Deitch Projects Torch

For those who have been living under an art world rock for the past few months, let us give you a quick recap of the biggest news to come out of NYC in a while. Jeffrey Deitch was selected to become the new director of Los Angeles’s MOCA. Due to potential conflicts, he will not be able to operate his gallery, Deitch Projects, while at his new position, and will be forced to close shop. Because Deitch Projects – one of the most innovative, fresh, […]

Openings: Rosson Crow – “Bowery Boys” @ Deitch Projects

On Saturday night, Deitch Projects hosted the opening for the ever talented contemporary artist: Rosson Crow. Her latest show “Bowery Boys” featured her talented nostalgic snapshots of the streets of lower Manhattan. The beautifully rendered works featured periods from the 1800’s to the current landscape depicting the gritty urban facades of the “Big Apple”. As AM previewed last week through a detailed studio visit, her bigger-than-life style had us excited to see the rest of the show. Fully utilizing the grand space that Deitch Projects is renowned […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Rosson Crow – “Bowery Boys” @ Deitch Projects

This past weekend AM had a chance to stop by Rosson Crow’s Brooklyn studio where she graciously gave us a sneak preview of her upcoming Deitch Projects show “Bowery Boys” opening on March 4th. As the name implies, Rosson uses her loose and dreamy abstract style to reinterpret the landscape & culture of downtown Manhattan. Working within the storied hall/traditions of Deitch Projects, Rosson dares to nostalgically re-imagine the “bad boy” underground streets artists of yesteryear and their impact on the urban culture of NYC. Some of […]

Teaser: Rosson Crow – “Bowery Boys” @ Deitch Projects

For one of Deitch Projects last hurrahs, the gallery will host “Bowery Boys,” an exhibition of new paintings by Rosson Crow. For the show, which opens March 4, Crow has used her adopted town of NYC as the theme for her bright and energetic large-scale canvases. See an image of the lovely Ms. Crow from the NYC Stages show (covered) and read the Deitch’s press release for “Bowery Boys,” after the jump.

Openings: Todd James – “Make My Burden Lighter” @ Gering & López

AM, along with almost everyone else in NYC, came out for the opening of Todd James’ “Make My Burden Lighter” at Midtown gallery Gering & López. Although “Burden” is James’ first solo show with the gallery, he of course has been a longtime fixture of the urban art scene under his street name REAS, co-creating Deitch’s seminal 2000 “Street Market” exhibition along with Barry McGee and Steve Powers. In this current show, James has created a new series of canvases and works on paper that […]

Teaser: Shepard Fairey April 2010 Exhibition @ Deitch Projects

The recent appointment of Jeffrey Deitch as the new Director of MOCA has spurred much rumor and speculation regarding the continued operation of Deitch Projects and their scheduled exhibitions.  It has been confirmed by the museum and by Mr. Deitch himself that all commercial activity on his end will cease by June 1, 2010, meaning Deitch Projects as we all know it will shutter. What happens to his staff and stable of artists is still yet undetermined, however, we at Arrested Motion have received word […]

BREAKING NEWS: Deitch Projects to close. Jeffrey Deitch new MOCA Director

Information from Jerry Saltz’s Facebook account: LA MoCA just announced that Jeffrey Deitch is their new Director. He begins June 1. He will soon close his gallery. Information from LA Times: The Museum of Contemporary Art has confirmed that Jeffrey Deitch will be its new director. We’ll have more details as they become available, but the appointment marks a step into new and controversial terrain: Deitch becomes the only art dealer/gallery owner to assume leadership of a major U.S. museum as MOCA eschews the usual […]

Rumor Mill: Deitch to head MOCA?

Some interesting chatter coming out ahead of the press conference on Monday to announce the Los Angeles MOCA’s new director. One of the top candidates is none other than Jeffrey Deitch, whose booth we recently visited at Art Basel Miami. If he’s confirmed (he’s got a good shot, seeing Eli Broad is probably backing him, two major galleries in LA back him – Javier Peres of Peres Projects and Blum & Poe, and his gallery confirms Deitch is in LA right now for “meetings”), it […]
