Showing: KAWS – “Play Your Part” @ Galeria Javier Lopez

Four years since his solo with the same gallery (covered), KAWS is back in Madrid with a new show entitled Play Your Part at Galeria Javier Lopez. With seven large works (4 large tondos and 3 custom shaped canvas pieces), the NYC-based artist introduced his newest paintings to the old continent collectors and art fans. The fresh pieces combine elements from the different phases in his artistic development, such as abstract segments and his version of cartoon characters, which is the type of work he’s been […]

Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “A Dream I Dreamed” @ MoCA (Shanghai)

At the end of last year, we had a chance to see for ourselves the genius of Yayoi Kusama while she was showing in New York (here & here). At about the same time, the Japanese artist also opened a show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai entitled A Dream I Dreamed featuring a diverse selection of large-scale installations, sculptures, and paintings. Head over for a look yourself if you are in the area as it will be running until the end of March. Photo […]

Streets: Os Gemeos (San Francisco)

Thanks to The Lugagge Store Gallery in San Francisco, the other day we finally got a chance to check out up close and snap some exclusive shots of the Os Gemeos mural painted on top of their building at 1007 Market Street back in Sept 2013. This magnificent piece was commissioned by gallery and funded by the Graue Family Fund for Public Art, and was painted over a previous mural the Sao Paulo-based artists painted on the same spot back in 2003 – celebrating 10 years since […]

Upcoming: Fuco Ueda – “Kioku No Hana (Flower Of Memory)” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Expanding on and showing a series last seen during a show in Tokyo last year, the luminous works of Fuco Ueda will be making a rare appearance in the Los Angeles area. On March 29th, the Thinkspace Gallery will be hosting Kioku No Hana or Flower Of Memory from the Japanese painter featuring her young girls positioned in a bizarre world filled with bold electric colors, flora, and fauna – dominated by flowers in this instance. POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Vhils

Alexandre Farto aka Vhils was one of the most anticipated names for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii festival. Both visitors and participating artists were looking forward to seeing the Portuguese artist in action, which kept being postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Eventually, the machines started roaring and tearing down chunks of the the wall. The scene was looking and sounding very different than at any other mural, as it all looked more like a chaotic construction site than where an art piece is getting created. Using his […]

Openings: Tomoo Gokita @ Mary Boone Gallery (Chelsea)

Last month, AM paid a visit to the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea to enjoy new works from Tomoo Gokita. Working exclusively in shades of black and white for this exhibition, the Japanese painter has created a series of textured portraits that pay homage to the “dated archetypes lifted of pulp fiction, Hollywood rags, and film noir” with names like Showgirl, Geisha Girl, A Bathing Beauty, Cocktail Pianist from Acapulco, Daughter of a Fraudster, and A Female Spy. Take a look at our photos below and stop by […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Dave Kinsey

Dave Kinsey (featured) was one of the names we were looking forward to seeing in this year’s edition of the massive POW! WOW! Hawaii festival. Even though he arrived a few days later than planned and the tropical weather wasn’t on his side, he managed to finish this huge mural after two long days of painting. Being especially intrigued by the shrine like shape of the wall, his piece is inspired by the constant battle between civilization and nature of Hawaii. The majestic tree in the middle of […]

Openings: Joao Ruas – “VERSO” @ Thinkspace

Showing through this weekend at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City is VERSO, a new solo show from Joao Ruas. The Brazilian artist presented a diverse set of works including his largest work to date (seen above), a wall mural & installation, etchings, polaroids, backlit pieces, and more utilizing mediums such as acrylic, watercolor, pen, pencil, and gouache. Head over for a look this week if you have time as the exhibition features some of Ruas’ most powerful and haunting imagery to date. Photo credit: Sam Graham. POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Seth Globepainter

World traveler, Seth Globepainter, recently finished up this large mural for POW! WOW! Hawaii. The Paris-based artist arrived to the island straight after the opening of his show in Paris (covered), and with taking part in the Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group show (covered), the mural was the second and main part of his participation in this year’s event. Inspired by the tropical paradise and island life, he created one of his familiar images of a little girl standing on a rock with her head being lost […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: James Jean

James Jean was one of the secret surprises of this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii festival in Honolulu. The American artist was invited to the event as a guest first, but once he arrived to the island, he decided to try out his skills in creating a large scale mural for the first time in his career. It was very interesting seeing the way he transferred his signature illustrative style onto a big wall, using only red paint and a brush, but the result was impressive. […]
