Openings & Interviews: Josh Keyes – “Natural Selection” @ Swarm Gallery

Last night, AM visited Swarm Gallery in Oakland to catch up with our buddy Josh Keyes and to check out “Natural Selection” featuring Josh and Vaughn Bell. Josh, who just moved up to Portland, has been incredibly busy with the move and flew back to the Bay Area for just a few hours to attend the opening. Luckily, we were able to catch him before the show opened and he gave us a nice tour of his three pieces (the fourth is almost done) and […]

Streets: Hugh Leeman – “Recognition” @ White Walls

At about two in the morning last Sunday, AM met up with Hugh Leeman in the heart of San Francisco’s seedy Tenderloin district as he was preparing for his upcoming show, “Recognition” at the esteemed White Walls Gallery.  For the past few months, San Franciscans have been greeted citywide by Leeman’s unique wheatpastes, each depicting a member of the local homeless population.  Leeman, who befriends and helps support his subjects, often times by giving away free clothing, has been embarking on a massive social street-level […]

Interviews: Know Hope

When we were passed this fantastic interview between our friend Thomas Dunlap and Know Hope, we couldn’t resist sharing it with you. The conversation took place during Know Hope’s recent LA solo show at Carmichael Gallery, “the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)“ (covered) and provides some insight into the artist’s creative process and the symbolism in his work.

Second Helpings: July 2009

July was a very busy month with numerous headlines making their way around the world of art. Here is another edition of Second Helpings to remind you of the juicy stories that we covered here on AM. Get served after the jump.

Highlights: Recommended Openings For July 30 – August 5

This Friday in San Diego, Kelly Vivanco returns after her highly successful solo outing at Thinkspace in Los Angeles. Subtext welcomes Kelly along with the up and coming Jason Limon. The botanical aspects in both artists’ work seems to be one of the main unifying themes in the show and their works play off each other nicely. Definitely a show to catch if you’re in the San Diego area this weekend. Subtext rocked things with their recent Comic-Con weekend only show and this is a […]

Interviews/Preview: Eric Fortune – “Daughters of Our Nature” @ Roq La Rue

“Daughters of Our Nature,” the latest body of work from Eric Fortune opens at Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, tomorrow, July 24 from 6-9 PM. AM first spotted Fortune’s work back when he participated in a group show at Copro Gallery last year and we’ve been captivated since by the ethereal feeling of his paintings, which are the product of a time and labor intensive process. We had the pleasure of catching up with Eric ahead of the show to find out more about […]

Highlights: Recommended Openings For July 23-29

Many openings to recommend this week and if you’ll notice, there is a large chunk of our calendar devoted to SDCC as there are many art-related events at the “nerd prom” in San Diego this week. One of our favorite images though (seen above) is from Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) as she opens her two person show with Eric Fortune (interview to follow soon) this Friday at Roq La Rue. Take a look at all the recommended openings after the jump…

Art Focus: Alexandros Vasmoulakis

AM is a big fan of Alexandros Vasmoulakis. Although he currently resides in Berlin, the young Greek artist dominates the urban skyline of his hometown Athens with enormous murals on the city’s high rise buildings. We love the blend of street and pop surrealist qualities in Alexandros’ work and his sharp use of color to create a sensation of movement. The scale on which he works and his ability to incorporate his pieces into their environment is very impressive. More images after the jump…

Interviews: Ellis G. – “Ocular Echoism: The Autonomy of Ellis Gallagher” @ Collective Hardware

AM had the chance to spend a few evenings with Ellis G. prior to his upcoming solo show “Ocular Echoism: The Autonomy of Ellis Gallagher” opening at Collective Hardware this Thursday, July 23 at 7pm in NYC. If you recall, we also had a chance to spend time with him on the streets before the group show he participated in at Thinkspace back in January. As we walked the streets of Cobble Hill looking for the perfect subject/shadow, Ellis seemed to know a lot of […]
