Preview: Josh Keyes @ OKOK Gallery

As promised in last month’s Josh Keyes teaser, AM continues with a preview of the much anticipated Josh Keyes’ show Mist at OKOK gallery this Saturday. We have obtained a couple new images to whet your appetite before Saturday’s opening. This highly awaited show offers at least 10 paintings and a rumored “butterfly” installation that should get the crowd buzzing! Keyes’ theme for the show, Mist, stresses the delicate balance of the environment and its natural inhabitants. Central figures of the artwork showcased are the […]

Preview: KMNDZ & Ekundayo @ Thinkspace

KMNDZ (above) & Ekundayo’s (below) two-man show is set to open this Friday, October 10th at Thinkspace in the Silverlake district. Arrested Motion was invited to take a look at the installation process last night, as well as take some photos to share with our readers. Those attending this show will be very impressed by the setup, as the two artists have completely transformed the space into the “Red Forest” (title of the show), the most radioactive place on earth. The paintings of the show […]

Preview: Brendan Monroe @ Galerie L.J. Beaubourg

Over the last several shows, it is becoming more apparent that Brendan Monroe is in the middle of a transition period. Although it can be argued that all artists are constantly evolving and technically always in “transition,” most collectors have noticed less and less figurative elements to his work. For example, he rarely adds faces to his characters anymore. Perhaps it’s a conscious desire to distance himself from the “Low Brow” scene or perhaps it’s a subconscious progression into more abstract imagery. His upcoming show […]

Baby Tattooville 2008 Wrapup

Baby Tattooville concluded yesterday with a fantastic brunch at the Mission Inn as well as passing out of the “goodie” bags (more on this later). We must say that we thoroughly enjoyed covering this event and would recommend attending next year for anyone interested in this genre. Arrested Motion will be on hand to cover the event again in 2009 and we hope you have enjoyed our on-site blogging this year. Over the next several weeks, we will post some extra stories from this year’s […]

Baby Tattooville Day 2: Riverside Art Museum

After an afternoon of artists alternating between sketching for attendees or working on the collaborative “Art Jam” piece, everyone headed down for the “Beyond Baby Tattooville” show at the Riverside Art Museum. We had previously previewed the show, but there was a new additional piece from each featured artist for sale at this exhibition. See a video of these new pieces & photos from the show after the jump.

Baby Tattooville Day 2: 11-12 pm

The session right before lunch was a panel of three artists: Dave Cooper, Brandi Milne, and Ana Bagayan. Dave did drawings of one of his famous luscious, lavacious, and occasionally obese women. Each attendee of the event was to receive one of these…there were inked drawings for sale too! (look for a future feature on these beautifully rendered drawings). He was also very happy to personalize these drawings to each attendee. Brandi decided to little paintings on matchbooks to give away. She also painted on […]

Teaser: Tessar Lo @ Roq La Rue

One of the most talented and thoughtful young artists that we know, Tessar Lo, is having an exhibition on November 7th in Seattle. By now, most of you have probably seen a couple images from the show on the news page of Roq La Rue‘s new website (for example, what is to be one of the larger pieces *seen above*). Well, Tessar was nice enough to forward us several additional closeups and teasers to show our readers. More after the jump.

Openings: Art For Hope @ Merry Karnowsky

The “Art For Hope” benefit (previously mentioned) took place at Merry Karnowsky Gallery last night. This was a special “one night only” group show to raise funds for the Obama campaign. Although this event was not planned very far in advance, everything came together nicely. Many of the contributing artists were in attendance last night -  Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Kent Williams, Mari Inukai, Jason Shawn Alexander, and Camille Rose Garcia, just to name a few. In addition to the artwork, there were several tables […]

Preview: Nathan Ota @ La Luz de Jesus

From the streets of Southern California to gallery walls across the country, Nathan Ota has proven up to the task. So adept with a brush, he has even taken to the classroom, teaching some fresh faces in the genre how to find their own style. His vividly colored and expertly detailed paintings have begun to raise eyebrows among collectors and gallery directors alike, with fast-selling pieces exhibited in La Luz de Jesus, Gallery 1988, and Billy Shire Fine Arts, among others. His upcoming show, “Way, […]

Teaser: KMNDZ @ Thinkspace

Johnny Rodriguez or “KMNDZ” to most of his fans will be opening his two person show with Ekundayo at Thinkspace on October 10th. Their interesting choice of a show name “Red Forest” (in his words) deals with what the Nuclear reactor explosion did to the people of the Soviet Union as well as the dabbling of the negative in all its forms and what it is doing to our hearts here in Los Angeles. Looks as though he has decided to mix rich red overtones […]
