Preview: Sarah Joncas – “Beneath The Seams” & Kelly Vivanco – “The Conservatory” @ Thinkspace Gallery

AM is excited about the two shows opening tomorrow, June 12th, at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, which include “Beneath The Seams” from Sarah Joncas and in the gallery’s project room, Kelly Vivanco’s “The Conservatory.” We’ve been fans of Sarah’s work ever since she hit the scene a couple of years ago. With a somewhat muted color palette, pieces with dark and moody overtones and her injection of herself in each of her pieces through painting characters resembling her own likeness, Joncas takes a unique […]

Flatcolor Gallery, located in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square district, kicks off with their debut show tonight from 5-9pm with new work from Joseph “2H” McSween (interviewed) and Parskid. Hot off his solo exhibition in Los Angeles, 2H wows us again with his latest body of work and his unique mixture of graffiti elements, creative lighting and of course, alluring women. Both artists will be in attendance at tonight’s opening. Check out some of their pieces for the show after the jump…

Preview: “Self-Portraits” @ Circle Culture Gallery

AM was lucky enough to get an advance look at what will surely be the most sought after pieces at “Self-Portraits,” Circle Culture Gallery’s latest offering opening tomorrow, Friday, June 5th in Berlin. Seen above is JR’s “Self-Portrait in a Woman’s Eye, Kenya” from the 28 Millimetres series and is a brilliant use of a subject to capture an image of himself. The idea for the show was to approach the historical theme of self-portraits and to bring it into a contemporary art context. See […]

Preview/Setup: Know Hope – “the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)” @ Carmichael Gallery

AM stopped by the Carmichael Gallery to check out the progress of Israeli street artist Know Hope’s first Los Angeles solo debut “the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)” (teased) opening tomorrow, Thursday, June 4th. His intricate gallery installation, comprised of paper raindrops, fishing twine and a lot of cardboard was really coming together. We were equally impressed with Know Hope’s new work for the show. His large mixed-media pieces just keep getting better and we were delightfully surprised to see that […]

Preview: Charming Baker “The Meaning of Everything” London Exhibition

It’s good to see our friend Charming Baker, whom we met last year at an LA group show, back in the spotlight. He sent us this addictive video featuring his artwork with the song “Some People Might Think You Look Ridiculous” by The Beautiful South. You can check out this painting at his upcoming show “The Meaning of Everything” at 50 Redchurch Street, London E2 7. This new body of work is a solo exhibition of new paintings and prints. The show runs from June 5th […]

Michael Kohn Gallery is putting a nice spin on the typical show, presenting patrons with a fully immersive visual and auditory experience with “Dark Night of the Soul,” a collaboration between filmmaker and multidisciplinary talent David Lynch and musical artists Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, a.k.a. Mark Linkous. The show, opening tomorrow, May 30th from 5-7pm, is a two-room installation featuring fifty photographs taken by Lynch complemented by the music from Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse’s “Dark Night of the Soul” album. The album was originally supposed […]

Preview: Josh Keyes “Sprout” @ David B. Smith Gallery

He’s back – after a sold out showing at Ambach & Rice last year, Josh Keyes moves to tackle the Rockies at the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver. As hinted in our studio visit, the new show “Sprout” deals with the ever present tension between nature and the urban landscape. Josh’s new body of work draws on themes from Alan Weisman’s book “The World Without Us,” which illustrates Mother Nature reclaiming the Earth’s man-made structures and locales. The show will feature the largest Keyes painting (seen above) […]

Preview: Tim Biskup – “The Mystic Chords of Memory” @ Iguapop Gallery

Tim Biskup opens his latest solo show “The Mystic Chords of Memory” on June 4th at Iguapop Gallery in Barcelona. The show title, taken from a statement made by Abraham Lincoln during his first inaugural address, represents the newfound focus of Biskup’s energies on the positive and have led to the reemergence of a more vibrant pallete and picturesque imagery in his work which is a strong contrast to the muted colors and expressionless figures from Biskup’s “O/S (Operating System)” show last year. See the rest […]

Preview: Matt Dangler – “Searching for Satori” @ Gallery 1988 SF

Matt Dangler (interviewed) recently sent us a couple preview images from his upcoming solo show “Searching for Satori” opening Friday, May 29th at Gallery 1988’s San Francisco location.  According to Matt, “In Zen Buddhism ‘Satori’ is a spiritual awakening that often comes suddenly. With hopes of reaching and sharing ‘Satori’ – I infuse my own spirituality within my paintings. ‘Searching For Satori’ seemed an adequate title, considering that’s what painting is for me and what I believe should be the viewers motivation as well.” Check […]
