Previews: Erin M. Riley & Lucien Shapiro – “ANEW” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

On March 3rd, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco will be opening a two person show entitled ANEW from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) and Lucien Shapiro. Although the pairing seems odd at first – when you delve a little deeper, you will see that both artists create personally meaningful work though unconventional methods. The Brooklyn-based Riley takes traditional hand-woven tapestries in a unique direction by choosing subjects that are considered taboo, which are often associated with womanhood. She further states – “There is so much about being a […]

Previews / Setup: Swoon & Monica Canilao – “Witch-Wife” @ Chandran Gallery

On February 19th, Chandran Gallery in San Francisco will be presenting Witch-Wife, a two person show from Swoon (interviewed)  and long time collaborator Monica Canilao. The title of the show refers to a woman who practices witchcraft as well as is a nod to the longstanding artistic relationship between the duo. The two-level space will be transformed into an immersive installation featuring the assemblages of found objects from the Oakland-based Canilao and the wheat paste portraits from the Brooklyn-based Swoon with inspiration for the new work taken from dreams that were […]

Previews: Alex Garant – “Wakefulness” @ Spoke Art

Coming up on February 4th, Spoke Art Gallery will be opening a new show from Alex Garant entitled Wakefulness. The Toronto-based painter is known for her double-exposed portraiture, lending a surreal quality to her subjects. This fresh collection of paintings utilizes a over-saturated vivid palette, part of her goal to overstimulate the viewer with her imagery. She further explains this new body of work – “I went through a big introspection as I was started Wakefulness. It has been suggested that human beings are not awake […]

Opening on Saturday, January 30th, and continuing through February 20th, W3-Dimensional will showcase a new collection of works featuring his ultradynanism style. Openings: “Major Work” @ Chandran Gallery

Earlier this month, Chandran Gallery in San Francisco opened a show curated by Andrew Schoultz entitled Major Work. The locally-based artist carefully selected a roster of participants that included himself, Alicia McCarthy, Aaron Noble, Kelsey Brookes, Revok, James Marshall (Dalek), Sam Friedman, Eric Yahnker, Mark Dean Veca, Saber, Hilary Pecis, Tim Biskup, Eric White, and Allison Schulnik. The premise behind the exhibition was for each artist to contribute a large-scale piece that they felt capture the essence of their work. The resulting show was quite stunning, as evidenced by […]

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “O Glorious City” @ San Francisco City Hall

It’s always a treat to attend Jeremy Fish (featured) openings. This particular opening was truly special as well. When we arrived at City Hall, an hour before the opening, there was already a long line of the locally-based artist’s devotees. As we walked past the line, we noticed Fish tattoos, t-shirt, hoodies, hats and one guy even had limited edition Fish leather shoes! San Francisco mayor, Ed Lee, declared November 19th as the official Jeremy Fish day. Why didn’t this happen sooner? We cannot think of one other […]

Openings: Barry McGee – “China Boo” @ Ratio 3

After an interval of seven years, Barry McGee is back at Ratio 3 in San Francisco and this time he brought along 50 of his friends to join him. This particular show had a few surprises and whole lot of what we love about the Bay Area legend such as painted signs, geometric paintings, customized surfboards, painted bottles, sketches, and photography. The main gallery hosted the man known as Twist’s work with the vacant store next door converted to the L. Quan – Check Cashing & Healing Arts Centre for all […]
