Openings: Tomoo Gokita – “On Paper” @ Bill Brady Gallery / Johnson Trading Gallery

On March 4th, Johnson Trading Gallery in NYC hosted a Bill Brady event – a pop up show by Tomoo Gokita. Coinciding with Armory Week, the show titled On Paper includes smaller works on paper by the renowned Japanese artist. The 12 pieces in the show are all figurative black and white pieces based on vintage portrait images, similar to the ones he presented with the gallery in Miami last December (covered). Tonight, Pace Prints will be unveiling a new body of work by artist Reginald Sylvester II. Entitled Reaching for Heaven, this series calls on his talent of using oil sticks & acrylic paint to create densely packed abstractions. Through bold colors, black outlines and child-like scribbles, Sylvester builds his visual vocabulary and with it, creates compositions that invoke the perpetual stimulation of today’s digital life style. This exhibition approaches the idea of humanity in an age where identity is synonymous with the selfie.

With the official opening of Armory Week in New York tomorrow, March 3rd, it’s time to tell you about one of the booths we are really looking forward to. POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Streets: Slinkachu

After a look (here & here) at most of the murals painted for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii, we now focus in on some of the work for the event that you may have missed. Created on a miniature level by Slinkachu, the tiny sculptures were scattered and hidden in plain site around Oahu, including underneath some of the muralists, leading to some interesting collaborations. CG2 gallery in Nashville is opening a two man solo show on the 5th of March, showing new works by Sean Norvet & Jason Lascu. On March 3rd, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco will be opening a two person show entitled ANEW from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) and Lucien Shapiro.
