Retna x David LaChappelle for Vanity Fair

So, it looks like the new spread for Vanity Fair that we mentioned a while back finally materialized. Taken by David Lachapelle (who just opened a show at PRISM), the photograph features RETNA (featured) in front of his West Hollywood mural (covered) with a little help from photoshop it seems. As an added bonus, we have for you after the jump a video that surfaced recently featuring footage of RETNA’s WeHo mural as well as an interview…

Video: Dale Grimshaw – ‘Semi-Detached’ @ Signal Gallery

Check out this nicely put together video showing Dale Grimshaw getting busy with the work from his upcoming exhibition Semi-Detached opening this Thursday 6th October at Signal Gallery. Dale’s fourth solo show in London will see the artist unleash some of his personal demons, which are expressed in the metaphoric form of his violent father and the troubled upbringing Dale and his family experienced throughout his childhood. Expect some powerful, disturbing and very personal imagery in the form of oil paintings and woodblock prints. Sounds […]

Streets: Mentalgassi for Getxo Photo 2011 (Spain)

For this fifth edition of the festival dedicated to photography, GETXOPHOTO, that takes place in Spain, Berlin collective Mentalgassi decided to create four spherical portraits and float them in the sea. Known for creatively wheatpasting over existing urban objects, this time they decided to take control of the entire process to produce these “elderly swimmers.” Take a look at more photos as well as video from Fermin Aio and Aitor Gisasola after the jump…

Teaser / Video: Kid Zoom for “Young & Free” @ 941 Geary

Kid Zoom, whom we last caught up with at his New York solo show, was recently featured in a video by Kingbrown Magazine. The detailed footage captures his can control and skills with spray paint quite well and will give you an idea of what to expect for the Young & Free show opening in San Francisco on September 10th at the 941 Geary. The collective of Australian artists also includes Anthony Lister, Meggs, and Dabs Myla among many others. Showcard after the jump…

In the over 30 year history of the Peanuts comic strip, the iconic characters have been inspiration for generations of artists, with some recent renditions of Charlie Brown featured here on AM (see Banksy and Tim O’Brien).  Now comes an archived short clip from the never released documentary, A Boy Named Charlie Brown, of creator Charles Schulz drawing the lovable loser and talking about what the character means to him on a personal level. Via The World’s Best Ever.

Videos: Scott Campbell – “That’s All Folks!” & “Prison Tattoo Gun”

Last seen outside his Brooklyn tattoo studio and rubbing elbows with the fine art world during the opening of Blankness is Not a Void (covered) at Marc Jancou Contemporary, showing alongside the venerable Raymond Pettibon, Scott Campbell has reverted to a more childlike forum, continuing his pyromaniacal tendencies with this new experimental video. Produced by Purple Fashion Magazine, the tattoo icon turned contemporary art mainstay pays homage to Looney Tunes with canon fuse and pipe bomb, perhaps working out the kinks for his next solo […]

Videos / Openings: Unsanctioned Banksy Show @ Keszler Gallery

Many of you may have already seen this video yesterday when we posted it to our facebook fanpage, but here it is again with somewhat of a followup. The footage above, that angered many street art fans, was put together by the Keszler Gallery in association with the Bankrobber Gallery where unnamed individuals traveled to Palestine and boldly removed some of the well known and much beloved work Banksy created for the Santa’s Ghetto event held in the West Bank in 2007. It turns out several […]

Videos: Cai Guo-Qiang – “1040M Underground” @ Izolyatsia (Ukraine)

Just this past weekend, Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang opened his newest solo show at Izolyatsia, the  new art center in the industrial city of Donetsk, Ukraine. Entitled 1040M Underground, the new body of work was inspired by the explosive artist’s visit to the coal and salt mines (1040 meters below ground) of Ukraine’s industrial Donbas region. As you can see from the footage above from Vernissage TV, the environment of the mines was really captured by all the components of the exhibition. Discuss Cai Guo-Qiang […]
