Openings: “One Page” @ Roq La Rue

It seems strange to write about a show that one curated, so I’ll just give a little history about how the show came together, and let the photos speak for themselves. A few years ago Ryan Heshka had a solo show at Roq La Rue which included a couple pieces that were sequential stories and presented as stand-alone comics. They fascinated me and I wondered what a full show, with an assortment of artists might be like. The planning began and a date was chosen […]

Openings: “Uchronia” Group Show and Amanda Manitach – “Whiskey Helps” @ Roq La Rue

Opening alongside Peter Ferguson’s Prime Meridian (covered), Roq La Rue packed even more art into the space to showcase the mini-group show titled Uchronia, and the upstairs featured Amanda Manitach’s Whiskey Helps. Featuring mostly Roq La Rue alumns, Uchronia asked artists to recreate or alter history in some way.  Femke Hiemstra imagines a different take on evolution which has enabled a frog to smoke a pipe while fly fishing with a pole. Jessica McCourt unveils the mystery of Percy Fawcett’s disappearance with a painting framed by […]

Openings: Peter Ferguson – “Prime Meridian” @ Roq La Rue

For several years now, Peter Ferguson has been transporting us to a world where human characters share their living spaces with monsters and other strange creatures. Prime Meridian continues to give us a glimpse into the every day lives of this world’s inhabitants. Over a dozen new works tell the tales of travelers, explorers, and even a bathing troll. Each piece has a color palette that could seemingly have come from being aged in cigar room for twenty some years. Complementary frames and inscribed title plates […]

Such a great idea. Now if […]

Upcoming: Travis Louie – “Archive of Lost Species” @ Roq La Rue

Coming up on May 7th, Travis Louie’s (interviewed) will be returning to Seattle (also see 2013) for another showing with Roq La Rue entitled Archive of Lost Species. If this piece seen here, Oscar and the Giant Tarsier, which will be in the show is any indication, fans in Seattle of his imaginary creatures and vintage photography-like renderings will be in for a treat. Take a look at the accompanying narrative, something that accompanies each of the New York-based artist’s paintings – “Oscar Pennington was a naturalist and […]

Openings: Sam Wolfe Connelly & Liz Brizzi & Darla Teagarden – “And Here I Lay” & “Anagrams” & “Altars” @ Roq La Rue

Sam Wolfe Connelly’s second solo show at Roq La Rue opened on March 5th. And Here I Lay features several oil paintings that can be described as haunting with a touch of remorse.  Feelings of quiet and loneliness invade film-like locations that could easily be used as crime scene evidence. The exhibition also has a few graphite drawings that add to the narrative. Sharing the downstairs space is Liz Brizzi’s Anagrams. The multi-layered collage pieces start off with some acrylic background color before buildings and city-scapes […]

Openings: Chris Berens & Patrick Kelly – “Nethermoor” & “Elusive Object” @ Roq La Rue

It has been four years since Chris Berens last showed solo at Roq La Rue.  Nethermoor, as the show is titled, is based on Michael Ende’s book, Die Unendliche Geschichte, or as many may know it, The Neverending Story.  The show opening however, wove a story all its own. Bad weather on the East coast and shipping issues caused havoc with the large exhibition, resulting in an open without the art. While Chris and his wife traveled from Amsterdam to be in attendance, the art […]

Previews: Chris Berens – “Nethermoor” @ Roq La Rue

This Thursday night, February 5th, Seattle’s Roq La Rue will be presenting new works from Chris Berens, his first solo stateside in the last four years. Entitled Nethermoor, the new paintings from the Dutch painter once again will mystify viewers with his nonconventional techniques that lead to distorted, hazy, and glazed imagery. Berens explains the new work – “There is a place where stories come from and where stories go once they’re told. All creatures and their fortune and fate, their destiny and history reside […]

From candlelit backrooms to small forest clearings, Incantation sees Roq la Rue Conjuring up a group show based on ritual and mysticism. Occultism is often seen as heretical to mainstream society, but the beliefs and practices are centuries old and firmly rooted in nature and our surroundings. The exhibition features artwork from over a dozen artists, including a few sculptural pieces like Mandy Greer’s black feathered Huldra Adornment. Other artists took the opportunity to bring the subject matter out of the darkness like Jeff Jacobson’s Opulent Hex and Redd […]
