Banksy’s “Pop-Up” store in New York

Rumors about a upcoming Banksy NYC show had slowed down the past few days… that was until Banksy dropped a bomb on us and updated his Web site announcing a “pop up” store in Greenwich Village. The store, which actually opened a few days ago, according to Wooster Collective, is called “The village pet store and charcoal grill“. The store contains no paintings or prints, but instead animatronic installations of strange and wonderful animals, the likes of which only Banksy could imagine. In addition, our […]

Preview: Josh Keyes @ OKOK Gallery

As promised in last month’s Josh Keyes teaser, AM continues with a preview of the much anticipated Josh Keyes’ show Mist at OKOK gallery this Saturday. We have obtained a couple new images to whet your appetite before Saturday’s opening. This highly awaited show offers at least 10 paintings and a rumored “butterfly” installation that should get the crowd buzzing! Keyes’ theme for the show, Mist, stresses the delicate balance of the environment and its natural inhabitants. Central figures of the artwork showcased are the […]

Preview: KMNDZ & Ekundayo @ Thinkspace

KMNDZ (above) & Ekundayo’s (below) two-man show is set to open this Friday, October 10th at Thinkspace in the Silverlake district. Arrested Motion was invited to take a look at the installation process last night, as well as take some photos to share with our readers. Those attending this show will be very impressed by the setup, as the two artists have completely transformed the space into the “Red Forest” (title of the show), the most radioactive place on earth. The paintings of the show […]

Obey Rose Girl print @ Irvine Contemporary

Miller, DC’s Irvine Contemporary Gallery will be releasing a new Obey silkscreen print entitled Rose Girl. The print will be an edition of 450 and will be available for $100 only in-person at the gallery. The exhibition opens October 18th.

Baby Tattooville: Thomas Han

One of the most frequently asked questions about Baby Tattooville is “what do we get out of it?”  As our readers, you all have seen our coverage of some of this “loot” already, but over the next several weeks, AM will try to answer this question in more detail. The enigmatic Thomas Han turned out to be one of the surprise guests that showed up at the event this year and he did not come empty-handed. He along with Munky King (one of the sponsors) […]

Preview: Brendan Monroe @ Galerie L.J. Beaubourg

Over the last several shows, it is becoming more apparent that Brendan Monroe is in the middle of a transition period. Although it can be argued that all artists are constantly evolving and technically always in “transition,” most collectors have noticed less and less figurative elements to his work. For example, he rarely adds faces to his characters anymore. Perhaps it’s a conscious desire to distance himself from the “Low Brow” scene or perhaps it’s a subconscious progression into more abstract imagery. His upcoming show […]

Preview: Damon Soule + Chris Mendoza @ Joshua Liner

Amused Loon by Damon Soule Opening at the Joshua Liner Gallery this coming Saturday evening is Damon Soule‘s newest collection of fractal infused work, entitled “Amused Loon”. For what has become a perennial affair with gallery owner Joshua Liner, this show will be a homecoming of sorts for Damon, a New York City native, with this being his first major solo show on his home turf. Since Liner packed his bags and left the City of Brotherly Love, thus closing the opening chapter of his […]

Interviews: Brian Despain

Ever wonder how a flying robot goes fishing? I mean, who hasn’t? As the above painting illustrates, Washington-based artist Brian Despain might just have the answer. Fresh off another strong showing at Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, Brian was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to sit down and answer some questions with Arrested Motion. Blending superb painting chops, bold iconography, and poignant storytelling, Brian provides an artistic narrative rich in aesthetic qualities and riddled with satirical expressions. After […]

Preview: D*Face + Obey @ Magda Danysz

This weekend, two of street art’s best, Shepard Fairey and D*Face, invade La Ville-Lumiere (that’s Paris) for a show at the lovely Galerie Magda Danysz. Looks like Mr. Obey will be showing mostly larger HPMs and album covers, giving European collectors a crack at some images from his recent, instantly sold-out San Fran show; D*Face will show some mixed media works and prints. If you are in Paris, check out the vernissage on Saturday, or peruse the show at your leisure sometime before October 25. […]

Baby Tattooville 2008 Wrapup

Baby Tattooville concluded yesterday with a fantastic brunch at the Mission Inn as well as passing out of the “goodie” bags (more on this later). We must say that we thoroughly enjoyed covering this event and would recommend attending next year for anyone interested in this genre. Arrested Motion will be on hand to cover the event again in 2009 and we hope you have enjoyed our on-site blogging this year. Over the next several weeks, we will post some extra stories from this year’s […]
