Showing: Futura – “Timewarp” @ Schusev State Museum of Architecture

Leonard McGurr, better known as Futura, recently opened a show at Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow, exactly 30 years since his first visit to the Soviet Union. Back in 1984, the artist was photographed breakdancing on Moscow’s Red Square, which was a symbolic act during tense Cold War times. Three decades later, Futura is back on the same spot, only few meters away when his Timewarp or ИЗГИБ ВРЕМЕНИ opened to the public on October 14th. Despite a huge amount of work and projects that has already sealed […]

Streets: Banksy (Bristol)

Yesterday, despite a recent hoax alleging his arrest, Banksy revealed his new work on his website – Banksy.co.uk. The piece titled The Girl with the Pierced Eardrum was painted the night before at Dockside Studios in Bristol, but shortly after the reveal it got defaced with a splash of black paint. The pieces is a parody of Dutch master painter Johannes Vermeer’s Girl With A Pearl Earring. Using stencil and what seems to be an extinguisher with black paint, the elusive artist created a clever bastardized version incorporating the alarm bell on the […]

Streets: Pejac (Istanbul)

Spanish artist Pejac (introduced) was recently in Istanbul where he created a triptych of pieces in Uskudar, the Asian part of Istanbul. The idea was to create an “eye trap” that will emphasize the strength and the illusion of the works by creating a sort of physical bond between them. Titled Lock, Poster and Shutters, the works where made between October 5th to 10th, using acrylic, sand paper and graphite. These signature artistic tools when modifying the given surface and creating such mirages. Always being focused on the urban context of his […]

Showing: Thierry Noir – “LA Retrospective” @ Howard Griffin Gallery

Thierry Noir, one of the true pioneers of street art in Europe, is currently showing his works with Howard Griffin Gallery at their new location in Los Angeles. This show presents a retrospective of the life and work of the French artist that created miles of illegal murals along the infamous Berlin wall in the 80s, sometimes literally risking his life for the sake of art. The exhibition includes new works created especially for this show, shown alongside rarely seen photographs, interviews and films, documenting his legendary murals. […]

Upcoming: “Ducks” @ Greenpoint Terminal Gallery

Christian Rex van Minnen’s oil on panel (seen above) is a painting created for the upcoming group show Ducks, opening on October 24th at Greenpoint Terminal Gallery. Curated by Ryan Travis Christian and featuring a very diverse type of works by over 80 artists, this show is built around this thought – “I hate how you’re just born out of nowhere, forced to go to school and get an education so you can get a job. What if I wanted to be a duck?“ Other participants include John Phillip Abbott, Daniel […]

Upcoming: Maya Hayuk – “Light Heavy” @ Cinders Gallery

After a successful solo show in Cologne (covered), Maya Hayuk is following that up by opening her first solo show in Manhattan on October 30th. Titled Light Heavy, this will be her third solo with Cinders Gallery, this time at their pop up location at Mulherin NY (124 Forsyth St). The title of the exhibition comes from the feel of the works created for this show – large and textured, the works feel heavy, but the bright colors make them feel light. As seen from a teaser piece […]

Previews: Thierry Noir – “The LA Retrospective” @ Howard Griffin Gallery (Los Angeles)

Some 30 years since he first started painting miles of murals on the infamous Berlin wall, Thierry Noir is about to open his first US show. His LA retrospective organized by the Howard Griffin Gallery will be the first official introduction of a real pioneer of street art in Europe to the US. The French artist, whose turbulent life included living in squats around Berlin, started creating public art as a form of rebellion and his own way of fighting the wall and everything it stands for. His colorful profiles, […]

Releases: Ed Templeton – “Wayward Cognitions” Book

Ed Templeton recently released his latest photography book titled Wayward Cognitions, published by Thomas Campbell’s Um Yeah Arts, showing 20 years worth of capturing street life in it’s purest, rawest form. The skateboarding legend, artist and photographer, whose books such as Teenage Smokers and Teenage Kissers influenced a whole generation of young photographers, this time published a book that isn’t capturing or  exploring a certain theme, but gives a good peek inside his extensive archives. Documenting the behind-the=scenes of skateboarding, alternative life styles, teenagers, general public, religious lunatics, homeless, drunks, and […]

Studio Visits: Jonas Lund – Studio Practice” @ Boetzelaer|Nispen

We had the chance to visit Jonas Lund’s Studio Practice project at Boetzelaer|Nispen in Amsterdam on the last day of the production process. By now, the “white cube” gallery space got a full art studio makeover with paint marks and scars of art making on every wall and surface. The works produced are scattered around the space, some hanging as the accepted ones, some marked as denied, and some still waiting for evaluation by the advisory board members. We’ve also got to have a look into a 300 pages book […]

Showing: “Abstract” @ BC Gallery

Berlin’s BC Gallery is opening a new season with an interesting group exhibition simply titled Abstract that opened September 26th. Featuring works by nine international artists, this show puts a focus on non-figurative artworks along with its possibilities and advantages. Experimenting with geometrical forms, materials, mediums and colors, often juxtaposing black and white, featured artists show their take on abstraction. While some artists such as Moneyless or Nelio use strict geometrical shapes, others break these patterns into new, unfamiliar ones. The creation and use of such unusual shapes […]
