On October 1st, Roq La Rue opened it’s doors to a cavalcade of new works. Casey Weldon (featured) was welcomed back to the gallery for Hastemaker, where he continues to explore putting real people in surreal situations. Jeff Jacobson’s first solo show at Roq la Rue, titled Aphotic Ilk, explores a world between worlds. The dimension shifted vision gives bioluminescence to several species as they explore the ether. Showing: Karla Ortiz – “Omens” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Opening alongside The Gilded Age, Thinkspace brings us Karla Ortiz’s Omens in the gallery’s Project Room. The San Francisco illustrator has delivered several new graphite drawings, each a miniature view into the life of their subject. With a hint of shamanism, the renders provide plenty of mystery and wonder, despite their size. Omens will be on view until October 3rd.

Over the weekend, Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles opened the doors to The Gilded Age featuring new works by Aaron Horkey, Esao Andrews, and João Ruas. Co-curated by Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace and Horkey himself, the duo set out to put together a “dream-team” exhibition, giving it a title that harkened back to the late 19th century and the industrial revolution. Roq La Rue upped the ante for the fifth edition of their Lush Life group show, titled Reverie. With both the main floor and upstairs project room utilized, and the debut of the large installation piece by Cheyenne Randall, the gallery was literally packed to the rafters. Earlier this month, Roq la Rue welcomed back Travis Louie for his Archive of Lost Species solo show. Louie’s finely rendered acrylic paintings are once again on display, with his usual recipe of the odd and imaginary. Oscar Pennington and his travels take center stage as he documents strange and wild creatures found around the world. Opening alongside Peter Ferguson’s Prime Meridian (covered), Roq La Rue packed even more art into the space to showcase the mini-group show titled Uchronia, and the upstairs featured Amanda Manitach’s Whiskey Helps. Featuring mostly Roq La Rue alumns, Uchronia asked artists to recreate or alter history in some way. Femke Hiemstra imagines a different take on evolution which has enabled a frog to smoke a pipe while fly fishing with a pole. For several years now, Peter Ferguson has been transporting us to a world where human characters share their living spaces with monsters and other strange creatures. Sam Wolfe Connelly’s second solo show at Roq La Rue opened on March 5th. And Here I Lay features several oil paintings that can be described as haunting with a touch of remorse. Feelings of quiet and loneliness invade film-like locations that could easily be used as crime scene evidence. The exhibition also has a few graphite drawings that add to the narrative. It has been four years since Chris Berens last showed solo at Roq La Rue.
