Streets: Ricky Lee Gordon, Stavanger

The biggest and arguably the most important outdoor piece of Nuart festival 2017 was the 4 story mural painted by Ricky Lee Gordon. For this large scale diptych the festival joined forces with Amnesty International, helping them spread the word about their Brave campaign. Through this campaign Amnesty is helping people that are taking enormous risks to stand up for our rights. As stated at the press conference held after the completion of the mural, it is important for these people to reach the wider audience with […]

Nuart 2017 / Murals (Part I)

Last week marked the 17th edition of world renowned Nuart Festival and AM was there to witness the making and the official reveal of the works created or installed. Matching festival’s ongoing efforts to use the public space as the platform for interaction and play, as well as the channel to speak up, this year’s edition produced some of the most original and thought-provoking pieces to date. Australian-born artist Ian Strange created a series of billboard takeovers, displaying his paintings created on found photos of […]

Streets: Nuart 2017 (Part I)

For their 17th edition Nuart festival took a significant and brave step away from producing an ordinary street art festival that results in series of beautifully colored facades. This year they’ve invited a carefully selected group of international artists and activists working in the public domain, more focused on using the public space to speak out, rather than “exhibit”. After 17 years of building a platform for network of artists, academics, journalists and other professionals surrounding the street art practice, as well as creating one […]

Streets: Bezt (Poland)

After many international projects and murals, Bezt from Etam Cru recently got a chance to paint a mural in his homeland. The result is this peaceful yet intriguing piece titled Blue Monday in Bielsko Biała, in the south of Poland. Choosing a very limited color palette, mostly consisting of different shades of blues and purples, the Polish artist painted this four story tall image of a woman carrying a lush flower pot for the “oBBraz miasta # 4” project organized by the Bielska Gallery Foundation and Bielsko BWA Gallery. […]

Streets: Upfest 2017 (Bristol)

Last weekend saw 250 artists and an estimated 40,000 members of the public descend on Bristol’s Southville and Bedminster neighborhoods for Upfest. The event has grown into the largest annual painting festival in Europe since its inception in 2008 and this year’s installment included large-scale murals by Kobra, Eelus and Jody Thomas. Will Barras and Xenz collaborated on a new wall which is teeming with detail that draws the eye in and holds the viewer’s attention; utopian landscapes and opalescent butterflies are intertwined with timeless cosmonauts and […]

Streets: Isaac Cordal // Nuart RAD (Norway)

Only a month ahead of the 17th edition of Nuart Festival in Stavanger, the Nuart team announced their latest public art project – Nuart RAD (River Arts District), which kicked off in Oslo last week with Isaac Cordal. Through this project, the team will be exploring the socio-economic and racial dividing line between east and west of the city by curating a series of public artworks along the length of the Akerselva river. To start things off, they chose to present the miniature works from the Spanish artist […]

Though fine art painters rather than street artists, Velasco and Sesma enjoy working in the urban environment and translating their painterly approach on a bigger scale in public. Coming without any preparation or sketches, […]

Streets: World Roundup (July 2017)

With the beginning of August upon us, It’s time to take a look back at some murals that caught our eye last month in this edition of Streets World Roundup, mostly painted in July. Entitled Skull in the Mirror, this project (part of the recent Label Valette Festival) by the Spanish artist is not the first time […]

Openings: Festival Iminente (London)

Festival Iminente (previewed) opened recently and will bring two days of art and music to London’s Brick Lane. The festival serves as both a celebration of Portuguese and pan-European culture and a warning of what may be lost as a result of the UK’s exit from the European Union. Vhil‘s cast concrete sculpture is based upon a sketch which he drew on a previous trip to the capital. The portrait is surrounded and interwoven with fragments of a city as viewed from above and the crevices created by the metropolis’ roads […]
