Openings: Nick Walker – “In Gods We Trust” @ Art Sensus

We’re still decompressing a little from all of the art events going on in London over this last week, and one of the highlights was Nick Walker’s opening evening of his new solo exhibition “In Gods We Trust”. We were itching to see where Nick was taking this exhibition after we saw hints of the scale and direction in our recent studio visit. Art Sensus’ spot next to Phillips de Pury was a fitting location for what was evidently a change in scale and also […]

Openings: Augustine Kofie – “Retrofitted & Other Forms of Vintage Futurism” @ White Walls SF

Last Saturday, Kofie’One / Augustine Kofie (featured) introduced his first solo show to the Bay Area with “Retrofitted and Other Forms of Vintage Futurism” at White Walls in SF. Many of the canvases as well as triangular sculptures you saw in our studio visit earlier this month were transported to the gallery, but also Kofie added a beautiful installation of his workspace so that attendees could see where his creative process plays out. Take a look at some opening pics after the jump where his […]

Openings: Fred Tomaselli @ The Brooklyn Museum

Last week, the Brooklyn Museum opened a mid-career survey of the work of Brooklyn-based artist Fred Tomaselli. Tomaselli—who grew up in Southern California, but has been working in Williamsburg since the ’80s—is known for his exciting mixed-media paintings, created by collaging figures and patterns from images of plants, birds and body parts clipped from nature field guides and magazines. Tomaselli also incorporates actual pharmaceutical pills into his works, before covering them in clear resin and then painting over top. The result is totally unique, combining […]

The “Pop Surrealism“ museum show AM recently previewed is now showing at the Carandente Museum in Spoleto, Italy. Put together by Rome’s Dorothy Circus Gallery, with assistance from New York’s Jonathan Levine Gallery, the exhibition brings together 45 artists from the new contemporary scene, including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Tara MacPherson, Jeff Soto, Travis Louie and a wonderful piece from Joe Sorren. The majority of the work was loaned by collectors, with the lion’s share from owner of Dorothy Circus, Alexandra Mazzanti’s own collection. The Carandente […]

Baby Tattooville ’10 – Art Jam

Baby Tattooville’s Art Jam is the artist activity that has received the most attention at each BT weekend. This is not without great reason as this annual fixture involves every individual artist at BT. During Art Jam, all of the featured and returning artists are welcomed to join together in creating a once-in-a-lifetime collaborative piece. This historic painting is started on opening day and is jointly worked on until the following night. BT guests are free to witness every moment of the piece’s completion. A […]

Beyond Eden ‘10: Shark Toof – Installation @ LeBasse Projects

Shark Toof debuted his first ever solo show with Culver City’s LeBasse Projects at Beyond Eden this past weekend. The prolific street artist mounted a visual assault utilizing his array of signature imagery, including sharks, cigarette boxes, comics and monsters. Using materials such as wood, spray cans, boxes, found materials and books, the artist filled nearly the entire space with art work. One wall featuring giant panels of screen-printed swimming sharks over a collaged and painted background would have been even larger if not for […]

Openings: Korin Faught, Krista Huot, & Mia @ Corey Helford

Recently, Korin Faught, Krista Huot, and Mia opened their joint exhibition at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. The three talented artists, whom NBC.com says are “taking the art world by storm”, have created three very unique takes on the feminine persona that span the historical art spectrum from neo-figurative to surrealist classicism. In case you missed it or would like to take a look back, here is our studio visit with Krista Huot. It provides a behind the scenes look at some of the […]

Preview: Chris Berens – “Leeuwenhart” @ Roq La Rue

In many respects, we here at AM have the wonderful purveyors of Roq La Rue to thank for opening our eyes – as well as those of many U.S. contemporary art fans alike – to the enchanting art of Chris Berens. It was with his debut stateside exhibit, Go West (covered), hosted by the Seattle gallery where the Amsterdam artist first spread his wings and soared across the pond into the imaginations of countless collectors that immediately fell in love with his unique artistic vision. […]

Beyond Eden ‘10: Bumblebee – “Bed Bugs” @ Carmichael Gallery

We at AM have been following Bumblebee’s work for a long time now and are now happy to provide coverage of his first ever solo exhibition. The buzzing and buzzed-about artist treated the Beyond Eden crowd to imagery of bees, children, environmental awareness and the joys of childhood, in an installation and collection of works that included sculpture and paintings. The colorful show was one of the top highlights of the entire fair and we are happy to hear that it completely sold out. See […]

Openings: Damien Hirst – “The Souls” @ Paul Stolper Gallery

If the show involves Damien Hirst, even a show of framed foilblock prints of 4 different butterflies in an array of colors, you know people will come out to see what it’s all about.  The controversial art world superstar recently opened a show at Paul Stolper Gallery in London and the guest of honor (well, she should have been, at least) – Arrested Motion’s s.butterfly (who we here at the office strongly suspect was an inspiration for the show) was there to bring you the […]
