Previews: Ryan Hewett – “Order” @ Unit London

Following the successful preview show earlier this year (covered), Ryan Hewett (interviewed) is back with The Unit London for his solo. Opening on the 29th of September, the exhibition will introduce a new direction that the South African artist has taken with his work and approach. Slightly stepping away from spontaneous construction and deconstruction and a deliberately chaotic working process, the new works are cleaner, more restricted and thought through. Solid color backgrounds, carefully chosen tones of paint, smooth gradients, perfect circles and use of masking tape for […]

Previews: Eron – “#present #past #sentiment #dust” @ Galleria Patricia Armocida

Today, Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan will be opening the #present #past #sentiment #dust solo by Eron. For this exhibition, the Italian artist prepared a series of never-before-seen works consisting of mixed media on paper, spray paint on canvas, and sculptures. The show is based on the same approach he has when painting walls and objects in public – by drawing inspiration from the perceptual phenomenon known as Pareidolia, an instinctive and automatic tendency to find familiar shapes in chaotic images. This phenomenon often helps rationalizing seemingly paranormal […]

Showing: Wayne White – “I’M HAVING A DIALOGUE WITH THE UNIVERSE AND YOU’RE JUST SITTING THERE” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week, Joshua Liner Gallery became the venue for Wayne White’s new solo entitled I’M HAVING A DIALOGUE WITH THE UNIVERSE AND YOU’RE JUST SITTING THERE. Transforming the New York showspace by taking over the walls with sculptural cutouts and murals, he then strategically embedded his paintings in place to complete the effect. The artist known for his witty word paintings (and his set and puppet designs for Pee-wee’s Playhouse) even transformed sections into what looked to be huge vintage painting – just like the ones he overlays his text onto. Previews: Mark Dean Veca – “New Works” @ JAUS

On September 16th, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) will be opening a two person show (along with Kiel Johnson) in Los Angeles at JAUS. Veca will be contributing some acrylic on canvas works that take his signature pop culture inspired imagery for a twirl. By twisting his subject matter, created with his signature patterns, into clusters of repeating motifs, he seems to bringing further abstraction to his aesthetic. Discuss Mark Dean Veca here.

Nuart ’16 / Openings: “Post-Street Art” @ Tou Scene

After days of preparation, the central event of each year’s Nuart Festival was held on Saturday, the 10th of September. Releases: Katrin Fridriks – “Noble Awareness” Print

As part of the Lazarides Gallery 10th Anniversary celebrations, Lazarides Editions studio just released Katrin Fridriks‘ latest print Noble Awakening. The second collaboration between the acclaimed Icelandic artist and her London-based gallery is sort of a follow up to her solo show Macrocosm (covered). As a part of her ongoing Flying Awareness series, the print explores the themes of time and space through abstract expressive paint manipulation. Juxtaposing the vibrant colors against a silver background, the edition recreates the fluidity and vibrant color of the original painting that was exhibited at […]

Streets: Nuart 2016 (Part II)

With only one day left for artists to finish their works for this year’s Nuart Festival, a lot murals and smaller pieces are getting completed as we’re writing this. Here’s another quick overview of what’s been happening on the streets of Stavanger in the last two days since our last update. German artist Evol created a series of stenciled buildings on electricity boxes (seen above) around the very center of the town. American-Spanish Axel Void wrapped up his large mural painted on a local kindergarten and is currently […]

Openings: Jeff Gillette – “Dismayland Nord” @ Nuart Gallery

One of the events that marked the official opening of this year’s Nuart Festival on the 8th of September was the opening of Jeff Gillette’s solo show at Nuart Gallery. For Dismayland Nord, the Detroit-based artist brought his iconic “dismayland” imagery to the idyllic city of Stavanger in Norway. As it was his first Scandinavian solo, Gillette prepared a brand new body of work for the exhibition. Along with signature collages and paintings that mix the post-apocalyptic imagery of broken down amusement parks and modern world slums, he also created a […]
